Manual transmission noise at take off

I have a 2019 Civic Hatchback LX Manual. This is a Canadian spec LX. That's probably not relevant though I believe it is differently equipped than the U.S. spec LX of the same year/gen. It has the 1.5 litre turbo.
  • I have 68,000 km on the car.
  • I am the only owner and have had no accidents.
  • The transmission fluid AND the clutch fluid have been changed within the last year or so and full the recommended maintenance pretty religiously.
  • I am gentle on take off and when shifting generally and I almost always blip the throttle when downshifting. (I haven't learned how to heel and toe but I don't feel the need to shift that rapidly.)

A few years in I started hearing this sort of chirping noise (?)
  • when starting on an incline (reversing or going forward)
  • when starting off while turning.
  • This is INTERMITTENT though a steep include (like in a parking garage) is the condition most likely to produce this noise.
  • It very rarely also makes this noise when starting off on a flat surface.
  • When I recently got my winter tires back on the foreman took my car out for a test drive but couldn't replicate the sound.
I mentioned all this to the very experienced service manager at the Honda dealership where I work. He was aware of it but categorized as a feature of this transmission which as been used in some form in Civics for many years.
Of course, I heard it again a couple of days later. Oy! I'm no mechanic but it does not sound like some benign quirk.
(One service advisor said it might be related to the brake hold which I use 99% of the time but earlier Civics which used essentially the same transmission did not have this feature, I believe.
  • Also, I have been able to produce that noise at least once with the brake hold off.) HELP!

So it makes the noise 100% of the time on inclines and occasionally not on inclines? The car might think it’s on an incline so it’s activating the hill hold.

Re: Manual transmission noise at take off

That's what frustrating. It's not consistent. It's most likely to happen on a steep incline and it has happened on a steep incline both reversing and going forward. The next most likely scenario is starting off while turning fairly sharply, I'd say. It has happened while taking off on the flat and going straight but that is pretty rare.

Re: Manual transmission noise at take off

I made a point once of taking "brake hold" off, on the flat, right after it happened, to see if I could eliminate that as a source and it still made the sound. When I got my tires changed last Thursday I described all this in as much detail as I could and the foreman take if for a ride couldn't get it to make the sound again. Naturally! And then it made it again a couple of days later. Argh! When it does occur the sound is definitely the loudest on a steep incline.

Re: Manual transmission noise at take off

kind of like my drivers' window. It would start working in the fall and star not working in the spring... This year, it finally completely failed a month ago and had to change the regulator...

Probably one of those things that if it is a problem you might have to wait to see if gets worse so it can be more easily identified.
