Do you use 5w20 or 5w30?
Do you use 5w20 or 5w30?
The owners manual requires 5w20 oil, but says that 5w30 can be used but should be changed to 5w20 at the next oil change. That could be up to 10,000 miles. I read that the only reason that Ford and Honda have switched to 5w20 for certain engines was to meet Federal CAFE requirements by increasing mileage by less than 1 mpg on certain cars to compensate for the SUV gas guzzlers. I read on some message boards that 5w30 might actually still be better for the engine because it does a better job of resisting engine wear and that 5w20 only works at all because of synthetic additives in the oil, plus it is almost twice the cost of 5w30 oil. I really don't think that Civic owners should have to sacrifice their engines and pay for special oil so that the SUV owners can bomb around. I'm wondering if it would be better to start using 5w30. Is the information that I have been getting accurate? Thanks.

Hello Junior. Your about to get either get told a lot of really bad stuff cause this has been asked to death or this thread will get locked in 5 minutes. Anyway, all I will say is use the Search feature and look for oil or 5w20 or 30 and believe me, you'll find something.
To answer the question tho. In a modern engine such as the 7th gen Civic you should run 5w20. 5w30 isn't probably bad for it but 5w20 is better and you will definitely get better mileage.

I found some of the old threads you were talking about. I also found the one that I put up a couple of days ago, you were on that one too, and I wouldn't have reposted this if I had known it had been archived so soon. Go ahead and archive this one too if you want, but I think that it is and interesting subject and a lot of these new posts are interesting too. If there can be 100 post threads on General Ramblings about whether to use premium or regular gas I don't see why questions about oil are off limits. Is the rule to revive the old thread if you want to continue the discussion? Thanks for the assistance.
hey, what do you mean by "archived?" why not just search for your old post and bring it back to life, instead of asking the same tired question again that everyone else asks...
look, i'll even do your work for you stupid link
and i'll even say this... Honda has changed the D17 to be a bit tighter vs. the old d16 block, and Honda already meets CAFE b/c its fleet mpg is nice and high. They probably suggested it because its a good, thin oil that our cars work well with.

Sorry about that, my post was not archived. A couple of days ago when I went back to look for it, it was missing, and I thought it had disappeared due to the server conversion and I thought it was lost, which is why I decided to repost. When I found it using the search function, it appeared to have been archived. Actually, it has been restored to the current messages. That post was too long winded anyway.
My apologies.

Honda isn't in the oil refining business so their oil is just a container with the honda logo on it. I only have 2800miles so I haven't had the oil changed yet. I am pretty sure I am going to use the amsoil unless the dealership has some full-synthetic oil to offer. If not, i'll just bring my own.

Here's the correct and only answer.
In the owner's manual it says use 5w20. Therefore, you use 5w20. Anything else could cause trouble. Maybe not now, but some time in the future with repeated use. Yes, 5w20 is difficult to find. Only Honda and Ford use this weight. Find it anyway.
As for the mileage aspect, (this is OT) I recently talked to someone who's brother works as a programmer in the auto industry programming ECU's. Audi's ECU is interesting. If the car thinks it's being driven in the European mileage cycle (being tested by a gov't entity for a mileage rating), the computer will detune the engine to get better mpg. Pretty sad when you have to cheat for a better rating

Ya, even Honda got busted some years back - when you drive the cycle on a dyno, you pop the hood open. Well, Honda programmed that into their ECU (by means of the mercury switch for the light), and when the tester opened the hood the ECU would follow a different fuel map!!! BIG time busted!!
Most manufacturers use the same "cheating" as Audi. During that kind of driving, the canister's will go through a purge. During the purge, they are allowed to use a different fuel map to light the cat off and purge. But they can only purge every so many cycles.......
