That's so cool. I might just want to stop by and check it out on my way to San Antonio in July.

looks like you ahve it all figured out man...best of luck to you. I am seriously considering the swap as well, but the SMOG issue is bringin me down...maybe i'll move out of state to goto school, to a state that wont have a problem with the swap. I also heard that you can register the engine to CARB and it will be legal for SMOG here, but then you wont be able to modify it any. I dont know why not, but thats just what i heard. once again, the best of luck to you htown!!

Htown,

I was reading the new Honda Tuner and there was an article about the K20. This article was saying that the new K20 will not really hold up very good to high levels of boost because of the thickness of the cylinder walls or something. Thats in stock form of course. They were saying that someone would have to reinforce the block before anyone could try anything outreageous. I don't know, you might want to buy the magazine and read up on it. Anyway, just thought I would let you know about the article.

Peace.

Hey Htown...if you live in Harris County you have to worry about emissions tests....if your in the suburbs like my self (Fort Bend County), they dont test the air quality.

Well I live in the suburbs of Harris County. <note to self: get inspection done in Sugarland...> The local Harris County authorities are being major bjtches about the emissions laws lately. They just lowered the speed limit on all the major freeways from 65 to 55, and this past week they lowered the speed limit on the Sam Houston Toll Road from 70 to 55 (!) Their reasoning is that lowering the speed limit will help reduce emissions over the next few years or so. Retarded!

Now you have half the people still driving 70-80, and the other half driving around 50 or 60. It would be a whole lot safer if everyone was driving the same speed.

Thanks for the tip - I will check that article out. Basically I have been hearing the opposite from ImportBuilders and everyone else I've talked to. They were all telling me how the K series block is built so much stronger than the B series and how it would be able to handle boost better. But one thing that Jeff said to me kind of had me thinking. He said that the new turbos for the D17 and K20 would be the first ones ever for Honda's returnless fuel system - basically meaning that instead of just adding fuel and letting the return line take care of excess fuel, the kits would have to use 100% engine management to handle fuel management. Jeff says that he predicts that initially there will be lots of problems with people running lean and possibly blowing their motors.

Hopefully this will not the case. I've seen the specs for the new GReddy RSX Type S turbo - 240 hp at the wheels (not sure what boost level though). This isn't as high as I was hoping (I was hoping for closer to 300 whp), so right now I'm leaning closer to building a reliable all motor K20. The main reason being that this is my only vehicle and I simply can't afford any significant downtime (not to mention blowing an engine). If I can get close to 230 or 240 whp with all motor, I think I'll go with that.

scc did an article on the rsx type s greddy turbo...it only made 243whp (over the 170 stock whp)...it didn't mention what boost levels it was running...but probably around 5-6psi for reliabilty and longevity...i'm sure you can boost beyond 300whp on stock internals (b series could handle it even with its weak rods)

When you get your car back you shoulc go to Westheimer where there are a lot of 2k1 and 2s. You will be the only one with the engine. Hope everything goes well.

for the ammount of money and time involved, as well as the fact that its SO cheap and easy to make a EG or EK hybrid, id say its a waste of both resources to do a K series swap anytime in the near future.

that should read : "Unless you have a lot of free time and money, and care more about being first to do it rather then having it done correctly and/or cheaply, then dont do it."

The GSR and Type R swaps are cheap and plentiful because there were lots of people willing to experiment and try things to make it practical. That, and as time went by, there were lots of used/stolen B18C1 and B18C5 engines to work with. If someone had not taken a chance and attempted the K20 swap, would we even be sitting here debating about the practicality of the K20 swap? We'd still have threads arguing whether the K20 could fit into the D17 engine bay, how are we going to deal with the engine rotating the opposite direction, yadda yadda yadda. In a span of 6 months we've answered the question of whether or not it's possible to do the swap. Now we've progressed to debating whether or not it's practical to do it or not. To me, that is some real progress

I know for a fact that there are at least two individuals and one prominent shop who are trying to do the K20 swap right now. I have been talking to them on and off over the past few months, and to my knowledge, none of them are as close as myself and ImportBuilders are to actually completing this thing. But just wait a while after a few of the K20 swaps are completed. After a few years or so there will be some inexpensive used 7th gen Civics and used K20 motors lying around. I guarantee you within 3-5 years the K20 swap into a 7th gen Civic will be just as feasible as the B18C1/B18C5 into a EG/EK/EH Civic or DC2 Integra swap.

And I don't quite agree with your second statement: that should read : "Unless you have a lot of free time and money, and care more about being first to do it rather then having it done correctly and/or cheaply, then dont do it." The swap may be a bit pricey initially, but there is no doubt in my mind that we are going to do everything correctly this time around.

Regards,
Aaron

Just a quick update on the swap progress: the motor will be pulled out of my car sometime tonight or tomorrow morning. ImportBuilders says they are on schedule and should have everything finished by the time I fly down to LA in a few weeks.

Click here for their website. They're pretty cool about letting people hang around the shop and look, but I'd call ahead and ask just to make sure. Just keep in mind that Tomo usually doesn't get to the shop until about noon, and Jeff doesn't usually show up until a few hours later.

Their shop is in the middle of an auto industrial park, which is convenient because whenever they need outside services (machine work, used parts) there is usually a place right next door or down the street that they can go to for help. I recommend taking the Euclid exit off of 91, head north on Euclid, and then make a right on W. Williamson. ImportBuilders will be on your right after a few blocks.

The first time you see their office you're going to think what the heck... these guys build world class engines? Their office kind of resembles a messy dorm room with the big video arcade machine and boxes lying around everywhere. But just take some time talking to some of the guys and looking around the garage and you'll see why their phone rings off the hook all day long.

The old motor has already been pulled out. ImportBuilders is in the process of examining the wiring, and they say they will begin putting in the new motor sometime next week. At the very latest it should be done by the end of the month, hopefully sooner (within a week or two).

i met tomo, didnt get to play him in street fighter though, i played another guy jeff though, he is so crazy... i played like 10 rounds and i think i hit him maybe 3 or 4 times, he said he and tomo are pretty equal

They're all a bunch of pretty cool guys, huh? I imagine it must be really fun to work at ImportBuilders - eating take-out pizza and hamburgers from George's (a GREAT burger joint down the street) every day while working on fixed-up cars sounds like a dream job.

Not sure if you got a chance to see the S2000... it's an ongoing project by ImportBuilders and the guy who owns it (a Saudi Arabian guy in his early 40's) is constantly taking it to racing events and such. Anyways, Jerry (the mechanic) is still looking at the wiring for the two engines and getting that completely figured out before dropping the new motor in. I'm getting a bit restless sitting here w/o a car, but I'm sure it will be all worth it in a short while.

Jeff Schaeffer is a pretty good SF2 player too, as I'm sure you found out. He and Tomo actually met while playing SF2 back in the day.

Whoa!

Haven't been keeping track of this thread, but out of nowhere, flashbacks.

I actually played Tomo in SF2 in a tournament way back when. I think I was like 11 at the time and got my *** handed to me. He was Guile and I was Ryu, and people were amazed cause I was actually pretty good, but still couldn't hang. I did beat some other high ranked players in the good ole days of SF 2, boy do I miss those days. Staying at a local donut shop for hours, with only 1 buck.

Sorry for the off-topic here, but oh the memories.
