The 2004 Lemon List

The 2004 Lemon List

Thanks to the efforts of the Center for Auto Safety, we are able to provide you with the vehicle complaints on file with the National Highway for Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Each year, thousands of Americans call their government to register complaints about their vehicles. The federal government collects this information but has never released it to the general public. The complaint index is based on a ratio of the number of complaints for each vehicle to the sales of that vehicle.

Remember the SRT-4 isnt a neon.... , and remember this is the Lemon List....... so the Neon still made it on the list.

this is also based on how many complaints actually made it to the NHTSA, wich is to say not all of them do..... How many people do you konw actually write to complain about a car, or any other thing (Like reporting a Business to the BBB)?

any Statician will tell you.... Statistics dont show facts, they show trends.

interesting none the less.

Subys in general are pretty reliable. I still have a Legacy GT (wifes car) and it's great. I've had 5 other Subarus over th past years and they have been extremely reliable. Those bad Impreza numbers are most likely for the WRX.. The 02 - 04 had a bad clutch shudder problem. Subaru finally owned up to it (sort of) and put out a TSB to replace the clutch and flywheel if the owner complained and the service department could varify the shudder. If the car was modded in any way, the claim was denied. There is also an investigation of some type of ABS problem and a cold weather fuel leak in the engine compartment. Another factor may be that most WRX's are beat on pretty hard by their owners. Doesn't do much for reliability.

I traded my 02 WRX wagon at +50K miles. I had the clutch replaced at 32K under the TSB. I also had a few fuel odor problems when the car sat outside in below 0 weather. Other than that, it was a great car. Very reliable and fast. I miss that 100HP I gave up for my Civic, but not when I pull into the gas station.

Now, about the Pontiac Aztek... those complaints are probably from owners who were drunk at the time of purchase, and woke up the next morning owning one of those god-awful things.

Someone said it already--these are only statistics and don't represent facts. There are too many factors to consider for it to actually be real.

I think you guys are reading the statistics wrong. The way I interpret them, the ratio is that one person complains for every xxx number of cars sold. So, looking at the list again, the Subaru only has 1 person out of every 27,952 Subaru owners complain. Similarly, one out of every 5,045 Dodge Neon owners have something bad to say about their car to the feds.

Nice to know. Thanks for the info.

The RSX number is surprising, however.

The only reason the RSX is on that list is because of the tranny grind. I read on CRSX and several people have taken action about the tranny problem and gone straight to honda.
