2004 Civic or wait for 8th gen?
Would you buy a 2004 Civic Sedan Ex... or wait for the 8th generation to come out?
I can't decide. My perfect car would be a DOHC 160hp Sedan, but I just can't see Honda doing that (though maybe with the coupe). But if they do, I'm gonna hate myself for getting a 2004. The 127hp SOHC version is fine with me - unless I had the choice.
I know the 8th generation topic has been beaten to death, so I'm not asking what it's gonna be. Just curious what you'd do.
Personally, I'm inclined to gamble and buy a 2004, as I don't think the sedan will change that much performance-wise.
Anyone think the probability of a 160hp sedan is high enough to skip the 2004 and wait for the 8th gen?

i agree with rob. the 8th gen probably wont have that many mechanical upgrades. at least not on the engine side. i doubt that honda would replace the motor completely after just 1 generation, especially since its doing a pretty good job at having good emissions. you might see a refined d17 with slightly more power, but i dont think youll get DOHC or 160.
plus with the 8th gen you will have the problems of a 1st year of a generation, so you might have more squeaks and just random stuff that the 2004 already has worked out.
id go with a 2000-2003 subaru 2.5 RS (im guessing you want to stay in the $$ range of the civic), or look at the mazda3 if you want better performance than the current gen civic.

I've been drooling over TSXs, but I don't want wanna try and swing one 'till I pay off the wifey's car (couple more years). I figured the civic might be fun to toss around and autox in the meantime, but I'd wait until next year if I KNEW a DOHC sedan was coming.
But I like your points... doesn't sound like the sedan is gonna change much, and not a great idea to be a beta tester for the first year of 8th gens

you have to consider this!
just loook at those many "failure" 2001 7thgencivic.....LOL
IMO IMO, wait few months and get new 2005 Honda....
it's gonna be the last line of 7thgencivic....and that's gonna be the "best" edition...
same thing as 2000SI....last "perfect" product of 6thgencivic...
If you wanna be safe, I would wait till like October 2005 when the 8th gen comes out. That way you can compare and test drive the 8th and leftover 7th gen side by side at the dealership and then decide which one you like best. Heck, you can enjoy deep clearance discounts if you want to go with 7th gen.
If you don't care much about the DOHC, then get an four cylinder Accord = 160 HP, or if you want more power, get an Acura TSX = 200 HP AND DOHC, or a V6 Accord = 240 HP, but only SOHC.
Yeah I'd go with the 2004...8thgencivic.com doesnt exist yet. Remember all the issues people had with the 7th gens when they first came out. Hopefully in the 2004 many will be solved. Remember with each new generation comes new problems.
the comment about the 4-banger accord...
it actually (the k24 with intake-only VTEC) is an awsomeengine. dyno tests prove it has more wheel torque than FWHP (crank rated from factory is 160HP, 161ftlbs torque). so that is something to look into. manual k24 accords i believe were able to keep up with automatic 6htgenreration V6 accords, which made 200 crank HP from factory and more torque than the k24. but this just shows how technology and efficiency of NA tuning Honda has been.

The 6thgen 4banger accord also had more torque than hp. Its rated at 150 hp, 152 tq

Problem is, they created this big hole in their lineup when they yanked the Integra.
I want a compact, 4-door sedan, with sporty power and handling.
This civic is ALMOST there, just needs a bit more ooomph. Still, it's fun, and I think I'd rather deal with the lack of power (relatively) than a "big" car.
The Accord is too big for me, and too "soft" in handling. Still, a very nice comfy car - just too big to feel zippy and nimble.
Then the next option is this huuuuuge leap to a TSX. Nice and sporty, but geez, 16k to 27K in a single bound, lol. Smaller than an Accord, but it's no civic either. But tempting.
What I'd LOVE is a sport version of the civic sedan... say 160hp, tighter handling, etc. for around 20K. I hoped that might be a 8th gen version, but now I doubt it. Probably only as a coupe.
Not really sure what you should do but I think the 7thgen is great. Every owner of a specific gen civic thinks their gen is the best. I happened to own a 6th and 7thgen. Not so sure about the 1st model year cars, but it's up to you. You'd probably get a good deal if you wait till there clearing the 7thgen's out!
i went to get an estimate on my car at my local dealer and some how the SI topic popped out. he said the 2006 SIs are gonna to be completely redesigned and that it will be available as a 2dr coupe. dont know if he's f*cking around or not, i could care less but if the coupe models do come out in 2006 itll be nice.
i think if you want a more "sporty" compact sedan with 160hp DOHC, go with the Mazda 3...they're pretty hot in my opinion. Or if you want a turo model, find you a Mazdaspeed Protege...Mazda isnt bad even though 33% is owned by ford..but if you want to stick with honda, get you an accord 4 banger..,. or what you want
