Compatible ECU's for '94 honda civic DX?
1994 Honda Civic DX coupe.
You can skip to the bolded part below if you just want to read my questions directly.
I recently needed my ECU replaced again since replacing it in 2019 (Unsure if junk yard part of aftermarket, paid $383 back then for parts and labor plus oil change). Car was having trouble starting, took it into my regular mechanic back in January this year and $4,500 later:
ECU, fuel induction system clean, fuel filter replaced, replaced control arms and ball joints, timing belt, camshaft seal and cover gasket, slipped brake shim, fluid maintenance, right front axle assembly, basically a nightmare that came out of nowhere.
After they initially misdiagnosed the issue as a distributor problem, they said my ECU was failing. $850 for an aftermarket ECU because apparently "Junk yards and parts shops are destroying old Honda ECU's now" and my mechanic wasn't seeing a used one through his part sources. Ok, I'll give the benefit of the doubt but that seemed odd to me. I knew it would take a few days for the the ECU to adjust, they suggested Cataclean to help clean out further carbon deposits. A month later nothing has changed from day 1. It is extremely slow to accelerate but once it hits 40mph it kinda kicks into gear though still slower than before it was replaced. Small hills that were once no issue cause me acceleration loss. I am gonna take it back in today and my mechanic said it may need a hard reset. Part is under warranty and the work done today shouldn't cost me anything.
TLDR/ Should a hard reset not fix my ECU, I would like to try finding a used one on my own instead. What other ECU's are compatible in a 1994 civic? Will an accord of the same year or generation work as well? Are the ECU's for 1991-1995 interchangeable?
My nearby pick n pull has a couple '94 civics at their lot but they may not have the ECU and I wanna try to figure out what all my options are. I've perused Ebay but know it's risky and don't have the money to lose on a bad buy. I'm not well versed in car stuff so I apologize if I'm kinda all over the place in explanations. I can't afford another car right now or even this year so I'm trying to keep what I got running, and unfortunately I have no one in my family I can really turn to about this stuff.
If you have any suggestions or personal experience to share I appreciate it greatly!
