94 Honda Civic EX cranks but quickly dies

I have a problem that I've narrowed down to a couple of things. Here are the symptoms.
1) car cranks, starts, then quickly dies
2) I click to II on ignition switch...no lights, no priming of fuel pump sound
3) start the car on ignition switch, (position III) but it immediately turns off.
4) If I play/jiggle key between III and II without cranking, I get the sound of fuel pump priming, and the CEL turns on, then off after a second or two. It started about a month ago, especially in the mornings, but when I restarted it, it would quickly stay on.

I think it may be the following:
1)bad fuel pump
2)bad ignition switch
3)bad main relay.

am I on the right track? What else should I check? Thanks!

for the motor problem then i would try to check these things out , it could be a loose connection at the distributor or a vacuum leak at the gasket between the intake and throttle body or insufficient fuel reaching the fuel injectors but if u have to jingle the keys for the fuel pump to prime then i definatley think that it would be the switch

OK, have one more thing I found out. If i keep the key pressed forward just enough, the car stays on, so I'm guessing it's the ignition switch.

One more question....do I have to change out the whole thing, including a new key, or is it just the back portion with the wiring harness?

thanks!

you could change the part in the back but if it was me i would just change the whole thing cause it sounds like the switch itself

Re: 94 Honda Civic EX cranks but quickly dies

Hi there friends.
I'm having the same problem with this ignition switch.
The phase II when I turn the key over is not working properly,
The thing is that when I fire it up on phase I, the thing will die after releasing the key back to phase II on the ignition switch.

I've already changed it once, andit didn't last 2 years.
Is there a way to repair the ignition switch white plastic part for good?

That white round plastic and of the ignition switch harness.

Will a 96/00 ignition switch harness fit for my 95?

Thanks.

Civic 92/95 to 96/00 ignition switch harnesses are they interchangeable?
Could I use the same harness for the ignition switch on civics 92/00 ?
THANKS
