I have occasionally heard that sand can enter the engine in gaps in the path after the air filter. I took a peak under the hood this morning, expecting to see hoses leading from the air filter, but didn't see anything to check. It looked like pretty solid metal that the filter was connected to.
Sorry if this is a dumb question--not a mechanic here, just trying to keep my 98 Civic (just rolled over 200K this week) going as long as it possibly can.
So what do I check, if anything?

does it still have the factory air box?
the bottom of the air box is clamped to the throttle body with a hose clamp, there's a rubber gasket in between. as long as the clamp is tight and the gasket is in good condition it should be fine

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

I did look again. I'm not 100% sure where the gasket is--or if it is visible without anything being moved--but I touched and poked around below the air filter, and nothing was moving or looked loose, so I suppose that is a good thing.
