Engine Oil Overfilled Question.
'97 EX coupe stock D16Y8. A/T, 155k miles.
Three weeks ago I brought my car to Tires Plus for roadforced tire balance + rotation (lifetime), alighnment (lifetime) and oil change: blend 5w/30.
I usually change the oil and filter myself but, figured for 8 beans more.. might as well. Last week I checked the oil and it was about a 1/2 inch over the fill level. I called them and they said swing it by and they'll drain some out. My main seal has a slow leak so my thought is if that amount of oil overage is acceptable then I'll leave it as is, as it drops about 1/2 a quart between oil changes (appr. every 3k miles). Suggestions please.

Re: Engine Oil Overfilled Question.
Hopefully the main seal leak is not caused by the overfill. My clutch started slipping after an overfill event in my miata... being why it's out for clutch work...

Re: Engine Oil Overfilled Question.
I purchased the car a year ago with a known main seal leak. When I changed the oil a few weeks after purchase I also replaced the PCV valve which was stuck and I'm pretty sure that caused oil pressure build up that lead up to the main seal leak. My son's friend is going to do the replace the main seal for $200 next week.

Oooh, you could take it back to the oil change place and blame them for the NEW LEAK that was not leaking until they overfilled it with oil.
Unethical I know, but do you realize how often people try to blame us for crap like that?

Re: Engine Oil Overfilled Question.
The dipstick fill area is about one inch which measures 1 quart or 1 liter (all dipstick fill areas measure 1 quart/liter [I think "all", I've never seen one which measures less or more, lol]). So a half inch overfilled should be about 0.5 quarts or 0.5L.
Since the entire capacity is 3.5qt 0.5qt equals a 14.286% increase in volume.
The safety low and high position on the stick varies by 1qt or 28.571% of total fill.
...I'm not sure if it will be fine, but I'd guess a half quart won't kill your car or cause major issues.

Re: Engine Oil Overfilled Question.
Pretty sure some Mercedes Benz used to be 2qt between marks.
Most automatic trans are 1/2 qt between marks.
If it's only a half quart over I doubt I'd worry about it much. A full quart would bother me though.
