Check engine light at 2830 miles!
I don't want to get off on a rant here, but......
I've had my 2001 EX for only 6 months now and the check engine light came on last Tuesday. I called the Honda service tech and he first had me check the gas cap to make sure that it was on tight (it says right on the gas cap that you should tighten it until you hear three clicks or the check engine light may come on). The gas cap was fine. So of course all he could say was bring it in and we can take a look at it SOMETIME during the day. I brought it in on Friday during a lunch break. I was actually surprised cuz they brought it right in and plugged it into the computer and had an answer in 20 minutes. The problem? The rear main seal was defective and leaking oil. I had LESS THAN A QUART OF OIL LEFT IN THE ENGINE! The tech said "don't you ever check your oil". That got me a tad pissed. I replied "umm the car is 6 months old, has 2800 miles on it, and its not scheduled for its first oil change until 10,000 miles. NO I haven't checked the oil yet". Then he said that, after the check engine light came on, that would have been the first thing he would have checked. Mind you, this is the same guy that I was talking to on the phone a couple days before. I then asked him why HE didn't think about telling me to check the oil when I first called. He couldn't answer that and walked away to start the paper work. At the counter waiting for the paper work to print he told me that I was lucky I had an EX with VTEC. He said that the VTEC motors are the only ones that would put the check engine light on with low oil. Then he got a kind of nasty tone in his voice and said "if you had a DX or LX, you would have just kept on driving it until the engine seized up". LIKE ALL THIS WAS MY FAULT! It was the rear main seal! grrrr. So they filled it back up with oil, told me the part will be in this week, but to also check the oil daily and carry some extra oil with me until its fixed because the rear main seal could let go at any time. Just before I left he though he would get in another jab and mentioned that my Injen intake MAY void my warranty and to put the stock air cleaner resonator box back on for better performance. I didn't even answer him. I just left.
Anyway, my first impression of Honda Service?

That sucks man.... You didn't do your engine any good....
BUT.... on page 200 and 201 and 202 and 204 and 207 of your owners manual, it does say check your engine oil and coolant at every fuel stop. They probably documented you never checked your oil-
<< umm the car is 6 months old, has 2800 miles on it, and its not scheduled for its first oil change until 10,000 miles. NO I haven't checked the oil yet". >>
and will try to screw you if you have any problems.
Sounds like your don't drive much - that means you fall under the "Severe" schedule, that means every 5K or 6 months!! Not trying to dis you - but you have to cover your a$$, or they will try everything to deny your warranty - if they haven't already!!
I have gotten in a habit of recording the oil level on the gas receipt, just to save going through the hassle of fighting warranty. If your engine blew, you would have to prove you check your oil

GRRRRRRRRRRRR. What a F*CK HEAD. I hate the dealers and their maintenance crew. Never want to own up to anything. Always trying to make excuses. Man I just want to punch each of them in the nut.

Holy shnickies! WTF is he running in that thing? Anyway, you might wanna find out if they are planning on putting the oil with the detergent in it back in your engine. The reason that the Civic isn't 'sposed to have an oil change for so long is that they ship from the factory with a special oil that will remove all the loose crap like metal filings and such in your engine. If you don't have that in there for long enough, they void your warranty on you, too.

ZZCIVIC : I can show you how much a new Accord engine cost. A buddy of mine had that happen to him when the rear main failed under warranty. He could not prove when he checked the oil, and they were able to prove it leaked slowly and he could have prevented the engine failure. The seal failed, not the engine.
Went strait to the top with lawyers, and all Honda paid for was the things they would have paid for: oil, filter, seal, and a couple hours labor. The other $5K he had to pay.
Is there anything else in the manual that it says to do on 5 pages?? Must be kinda important!!
