97 LX with possible CPS issue
97 LX with possible CPS issue
I'm looking at a 97 Civic LX with 141000 miles for my son to drive. Car is in good shape, but after sitting for about 6 months, it's started to throw a crankshaft position sensor error. I don't remember the exact number. The car starts just fine but after it warms up, the idle begins to rise and fall. I've driven it a bit and it seems to run fine, but I never drove it over 45 mph. The seller said he was told the wiring on the sensor could cause this issue. One dealer I talked to said that these sensors usually just die and it could be that the timing has skipped and that would most likely bend a valve and destroy the engine. Maybe, but it runs better than any other engine I've ever run with a bent valve.
Anybody have any suggestions on what the issue might be?
Thanks,

Would help to know the actual code.
The sensor on the front of the engine by the crank timing gear is a CKF sensor, whereas your CKP sensor is inside the distributor.

Go to local parts store (open on Sunday, DangerZone?) and have them do the free code read. Write down the code number(s) and report back?
