2000 DX distributor question
2000 DX distributor question
Hi all.
Newbie poster, pre-apologize for any forum gaffes.
Elderly friends car, standing for 2 weeks and now a no start.
Have some knowledge and tools.
No spark.
Replaced coil. No help.
Have LED tester and have been probing 8 wire distributor harness in attempt to isolate cause.
According to diagnostic I found on internet, when engine cranked I should get a pulse on 1 or both of the 2 harness wires nearest the firewall.
I'm getting power on LED when ignition in position II but LED goes dead when engine being cranked.
My electrical system experience is a bit limited.
Can I get a confirmation that this behavior is:
1. wrong
2. indicative of PCM/ECM failure
or
3. possibly and ignition key/cylinder short.
TIA.
Dave

Re: 2000 DX distributor question
Hi Mikey, thanks for reply.
No spark at plugs.
In S. Florida, so no temperature related issues.
I've followed trouble shooting sequence here:
http://easyautodiagnostics.com/honda...system-tests-5
And have reached point 6:
"If the triggering signal is present, the LED Light will light on and off continuously as long as your assistant is cranking the engine."
The LED goes dead when I crank the engine.
Short in ignition cylinder?
Dead ECM/PCM?
Ghosts?
Re: 2000 DX distributor question
Certainly a possibility.
But I think I'm upstream of the distributor at the moment and not getting the signal from the PCM that I am supposed to get coming in to the distributor harness:
"If the triggering signal is present, the LED Light will light on and off continuously as long as your assistant is cranking the engine."
"The LED goes dead when I crank the engine."

Re: 2000 DX distributor question
Hi Mikey,
Thanks for suggestions.
Turned out to be the main relay.
So in case anyone stumbles across this thread:
Symptom - No spark, **No Check Engine Light when ignition turned to on**
Cause - Main relay gone bad.
Dave
