Shifter Backlight??
Shifter Backlight??
I just got a 2004 Civic LX Sedan (My first civic) and I have what might be a dumb question. Does the shifter (automatic) supposed to have a backlight where you would be able to see the gears at night or do you just have to go by the gears on the dash? If there is supposed to be a backlight, is there a bulb I can change or do I have to replace the shifter unit? Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

I have an auto and mine is backlit. My friend also has an auto but his is a sedan. doubt this would affect anything. although he did install a stereo and probably shifted something. Part number 1 is the bulb
Re: Shifter Backlight??
i had the same bulb die on my 04 as well. you need to first remove the plastic ring around the shifter assembly, then open the cup holder door and pry the entire unit off from the shifter. It will be hard the first time. I recommend you go to http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ to get the #1 bulb. Its an easy job and good luck with the car!
Re: Shifter Backlight??
Great!! Thanks everyone for their help!! Most helpful forum I've ever been on! I will be changing it out this weekend if I can get a hold of the bulb at Autozone/Advanced. Thanks again!!

Just an update.. I bought the 74 bulb at the auto parts store and changed it out in under 2 minutes without any tools! Thanks again to all those that helped!!

Re: Shifter Backlight??
How did you open it? I gotta change mine. When i first bought the car it didn't light up, then i knocked on it one time and it turned on and i freaked out cuz i didnt know it had a light lol. First like 3 times it did that it worked, but now it's just dead lol.
Re: Shifter Backlight??
First you gotta pull out black ring lining the silver ring with a putty knife or something wide and thin. Then the silver ring around the shifter. After that, pull off the top cover, it shouldn't be too difficult, just be steady with the final plate cover and it should be under there.
Re: Shifter Backlight??
It's really easy. Grab the thin trim arond the shifter and pull it out. Then pull the thicker trim up (don't worry, nothing will break) and out. There will be two cables with a socket at the end going into the left side of the shifter. Twist the socket a half turn and pull it out. Take out the bulb that's currently in there and replace it with a size 74 bulb. The 74 is a little bigger than the one from factory so you will have to force it in the socket. Push it in straight down to avoid breaking the bulb. Replace the socket and trim and you're good to go!
