Hooking up a second battery or alternator?
Hooking up a second battery or alternator?
Hey everyone, ok i was thinking about getting a optima yellow top battery and hooking it up in my trunk. What would be the negatives/positives of having it as a secondary battery or should I just take out my current battery and replace it with a yellow top? Also would this be almost as good as getting an alternator?

um i dont think a optima on a stock would do much. aside from longer life. drainw ould still stress the stocker.
do a Big 3 upgrade. those are great. and replace stock if you want to upgrade.

get the bigger yellow top, it does fit in the stock location as long as you don't have a cold air down pipe in the way. Mine has lasted 4+ years with numerous times of me leaving my headlights on, and I have about 1200w in my audio system. As long as you have the car running while you are playing music, then you should be fine. Having the car off and using your bags once to lower it will not kill the battery. I don't know how you have your bags wired. As long as you are not sitting there lowering and lifting the car with the engine off then the yellow top will be fine.
sorry, didn't answer your ? having a second battery causes more stress for your stock alt because now it has to charge 2 batteries instead of one. Nothing will be better than getting a high output alternator. But do you need one because your lights dim while you are driving still or do you want a 2nd batt so that you can use your bags numerous times with the engine off?

If you do replace the primary battery with an optima make sure you get the correct yellow top. They make two. One with starting technology and one without, or they used to. Get the one with starting technology. I believe it's got the dark grey case. There are other, less costly alternatives as well. You don't need the group 51 size specific for Honda battery boxes. A standard battery size will fit, and probably give you a little more CCA's(usually). Alternatives are pretty much anything, but one of the favorites seems to be the Exide 34c. It's basically the same battery as the Optima without the pretty colors. Megahurtz can attest to it's fitament as this is what he runs (or did, haven't been on in about a month, so who knows at this point?).
If you're going to add a secondary battery, there are a lot of steps involved. And make sure you vent the battery and put it in a sealed box.

Yeah, I still run the Exide 34XCD, great battery. Cheaper than the Yellow Top and more power. Can take an 1100 amp (or something) load for 5 seconds. The Optima I believe is quite a bit less.
Alternator would be a good idea too, you can help your electrical system with an upgraded battery, but ultimately an alternator is where the juice comes from.
<shameless plug>I just so happen to sell custom HO alternator kits up to 200 amps that will fit our cars, PM if interested, or check the retail sales section of the board.</shameless plug>
