I made an MDF ring and screwed that onto the door... then screwed the speaker to the mdf ring... or you can bypass all that trouble because somebody either metra or scoche makes a speaker kit for the civic...

i fit mb quart 6.5's in my car by bringing it to a local hole in the wall startup shop owned and operated by a kicka$$ 9 yr installer who had just opened his own shop, he used an air compressor with some type of saw blade to cut through the metal of the door to fit my speakers, he made baffles using MBF to mount the speakers and then to the door, I watched as he did it, took about 3 hours, he charged me $60 and gave me a verbal agreement to a lifetime warranty on the install, i'm sure nothing will ever happen to the install, he just wants to let people know that if there's anything wrong with the work he does he'll fix it and make it right.
Before going to him i went to 2 other places to get the speakers installed....first was a place called Tweeters, the installer told me to come back in a few months because he was too booked to install speakers i bought elsewhere, the 2nd place was a place called boomer mcloud's (i call them Booming McClowns) who said oh no, you can't install 6.5's in your civic, they must be 5.25's, i have a bunch i could sell to you and only charge you..lets say $50 for the install, $75 if they are components.
There are several ways to install your front speakers, easiest is with a baffle, if you need to cut into the door this can be done (i've heard) with aviation shears, another technique somebody mention recently (i think it was whiterabbit) is to cut outward with a saw or whatever you have straighlines outward from where the center of your speaker would be, kind of like sun rays or something, then hammer the metal back and out of the way..making room for your speakers. Sorry for the long post, slightly off topic maybe, i think i have a drinking problem.

I dont think mine was that complicated... took me an hour and like $5 worth of wood and a jig saw... not even $5 cuz the rest i ended up throwing away... but it works fine, sounds great, no rattle or anything. i got pioneer 6.5 4 ways in the front.
I used universal 6.5" plastic spacers from Frys to fit some Infinity components.
I still haven't done my passenger side so I'll try to take some pics tomorrow and put them up as a DIY.
I did my drivers side 4-5 months ago =)

I had baffles custom made because depth from my boston 6.5's is too deep. the speaker hole was enlarged slightly to accomodate, however the installer left everything intact so that I could convert back to stock if I had too.
I used pre-made spacers (Scosche) that I bought from SoundDomain.com. Worked like a champ...you just have to make sure the speaker is "centered" in the opening. I drew a circle around the stock speaker with a sharpie before I removed it; that gave me an idea of where the new speaker's center should be.

It all depends on the mounting depth of your speaker and the size of the speaker, not all 6.5's are the same (depth and basket size)......the scosche adaptor for example works for "most" applications.
ok, i would like to install alpine SPR-174A speakers
http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/...y=90&p_main=10
how thick of a spacer(baffle) will i need? is 1/2" enough or do i need 3/4"MDF?
also, do i need to hack away at the sheetmetal to in order to get the magnet inside the door? how about the plastic part of the door? do i need to cut away any part of the plastic door panel?
BTW, will installing new front speakers give me more bass? i already know it'll give me much better highs but i would also like a little more bass. right now i dont want a sub in the trunk and my rear MTX 3way 6x9's are actually giving me less bass than the stock speakers. (it would be great if someone can reccomend me a new pair of 2way 6x9's(i dont want components because of the trunk spring issue)
