I've decided what to buy for my first audio system! Tell me what you think..
Hey guys,
After some searching, and alot of help from two knowledgable guys on this forum Ive come down to what Im going to buy here in a few days for my audio system. This will be my first system to own so Im pretty excited about it. Tell me what you think!
MB Quart PCE216 components
JL 10w3 (DVC 2 ohm)
Alpine M500
Alpine T220
Currently, I have a Sony CDX-M3DI head unit so Im hoping everything that Im planning to buy will be compatible with the HU. I plan to use a sealed box for the subs. Im hoping its possible to somehow make the sealed box look like a bandpass box as all my research shows that a bandpass box hurts the quality of the sound. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

sounds like good stuff. but why do you want it to look like a bandpass?
you could add a chamber onto the back of the box with ports coming out of it, but leave it seperate from the sealed area of the box, if you have some outstanding reason why you need this.

Well the reason I would like for it to look like a bandpass box is just trying to go for that clean look when you pop the trunk. Ive never been a fan of two seperate boxes in the back of the trunk. I mean you could be creative and add the amp in the middle but it doesnt look full. So with that being said, I would like the whole back part of the trunk being taken up by the "full size" box, the two amps hooked up on the back of the box so that when your inside the car you can pop down the backseat and see the amps. Oh and of course theres plenty of room for things to put in my trunk. I just feel if I go for two seperate, sort of small boxes, the system looks kind of "naked" or just not big enough. Its horrible terminology I know, but in no way am I sacrificing the sound for looks.

No, I just want to keep it simple. When you pop the trunk, I just want to see two subs in one full size box. However, Im wondering where I can find such a box that looks like a bandpass box but is sealed on each end for the subs?
There is no such thing. A bandpass generally has a sealed part and a ported part. What you need is a typical box w/ windows in the back side of it. From the trunk you see a typical sealed box. From the front, with the seats down, you can see the rear of the subs in the box. You would most likely have to get a box like this cusom made.

Yeah I just got done talking with a the guy whos going to help me install it. He said he can custom make a box....but first I want to see how much hes going to charge. As for his assistant who showed me his system in his neon...I pray to God my system dont sound like his. He had two Sony Xplod 10inch subs w/ a Sony Xplod amp. It sounded terrible. He had no components up front, but still you would think the subs would sound nice.

now it's a triple post... you *****! j/k
i would just ditch the box and get a custom one done. or get a generic box and then add a piece of wood to seal off the area making it look like one big box from the inside. or use 2 pieces of wood, mounting the amps inbetween kinda with a cut out on one side to show them off. you have some choices

so from what I gather you just want one box...not two seperate ones? Why dont you just get a dual 12" box sealed? A custom box with plexi windows is probably going to cost around $400.

Yeah, again after searching more on this Ive learned more on the terminology of these boxes. Thats exactly whats Im looking for......a dual box that is custom fitted for our civic trunk. I mean the whole box covers the entire backend of the trunk like a bandpass box would but is sealed. Anyone know where I can go for such and what price am I looking at? Thanks.
Its not possible to buy a box that covers the whole back of the trunk, because the wheel wells will create gaps unless the box is custom built with curved sides to compensate for that. You also have the trunk lid hinges to worry about. You basically want to get a box that will fit between the trunk lid supports. You'll have to go out and measure because I dont remember the exact width you have to work with, however *most* dual 12" boxes will fit.
Civic02 - Did you give a listen to the Boston Acoustics 6.5PRO components? I was going to go MB Quart as well, but the clarify of the BA's changed my mind.
Not cheap, but worth it given that the majority of what you hear is coming from your fronts...
