Water pump/head gasket
Water pump/head gasket
Hi all I have 05 civic sport the heating is constantly cold and temp needle rising and falling inconsistently. How can I determine if the problem is water pump or head gasket related?
Re: Water pump/head gasket
To me it sounds like a bad thermostat or temperature sensor both are easy to replace.
1.) verify you have no coolant leaks, park on concrete and let the car sit or put cardboard under it and let it sit.
2.) make sure your hoses are in good condition both with running and not running. Pin holes are hard to detect unless cars running
3.) drive the car for a while till the engine is usually at normal operating temperature, generally 10-20 mins. Then stop, turn car off, pop hood, squeeze upper and lower hoses. If they are cold to touch you could have a bad thermostat or temperature sensor. (Just make sure to replace the gasket and thermostat if that’s your issue)
4.) if it’s your water pump when you squeeze the hoses while vehicle is still close to normal operating temperature there will be no resistance when you squeeze them, no pressure in hoses. Your water pump is what circulates coolant through the engine and so on so forth. Your water pump when it fails will usually just make the car overheat, because there’s no coolant or water flowing through the engine causing your engine to over heat and possibly causing engine damage.
5.) if it’s your head gasket, you will be losing coolant with no visual leak, and car will over heat. If it’s low on oil and your exhaust blows white smoke that’s one way to tell it’s a head gasket, or if you check your oil and there is water in the oil that’s another sign.
6.) check radiator cap (as they do go bad every so often)
7.) dont pay attention to the temperature gauge let the car run until you can feel the motor heating up, a bad thermostat or water pump will make the gauge act weird
With all of that being checked, if it’s your water pump and yours is an internal water pump you will have to replace the whole timing belt assembly (if your notnin a major hurry or bind to fix it you can order from Rock Auto or any OEM online parts store it will save you some money)
If you do find yourself having to replace the timing belt assembly you could save yourself any trouble and go ahead and do a head gasket replacement considering you will have basically everything out of the way to just unbolt it and put on a new one and reboltnit down (using correct torque specs, Honda dealer can tell you all of that)
If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Water pump/head gasket
Radiator antifreeze level is too low. Refill radiator and burp all the air from the system, heat and temp gauge will be normal for a little while until the antifreeze level drops again
Look for the antifreeze leaks
Probably has a blown head gasket....If reservoir keeps filling or overflowing but the radiator level keeps dropping........
