'97 Civic LX 1.6 4Dr Water Pump & Fuel Pump Question

Ok,

I've got a 97 civic lx with 145,000 miles on it.

The timing belt was replaced @ 90k.

I was cheap and did not get the water pump replaced at the time.

I know I know, dumb move as you usually do both at the same time and you need to take out the timing belt to get at the water pump.

Which leads me to my question... should I just get the water pump replaced now or should I do both?

Also, I dont' remember changing the fuel pump on this car... is this something i should do also?

Any help is appreciated

might as well do the belt again, since you have to do the same labor anyway and it will all be taken apart. you only change fuel pump if the fuel pressure is below spec. most times, you just replace the fuel filter.

hah. a properly working water pump will last as least as long as a properly working fuel filter. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. if it is broke then the temperature will shoot up and you should turn off the engine and replace it then.

if a 400hp turboed D civic can do drag runs on a 200,000km water pump, i'm sure yours will be fine. the dealership is obviously trying to fleece you for funds. unless you're a complete fool, the temperature gauge will tell you when the pump fails and you can turn the car off and replace it then. this is one of those "if it ain't broke..." things.

Re: '97 Civic LX 1.6 4Dr Water Pump & Fuel Pump Question

only on the newer civics 2001+ does honda recommend changing the fuel filter every 100k miles, or sooner if fuel pressure drops. earlier models are every 30-60k miles and they use a canister type filter in the engine bay, instead of an internal filter in the tank.
