water pump bolt head broke
water pump bolt head broke
hey
I was changing the timing belt + water pump on canadian civic Si 2005 with abs brakes.
when it came to screwing the new water pump on, i probably put the longer bolts in the wrong place and the head snapped and then the rest of the threads of the bolt is screwed in the hole. since its abs brakes i got a big thing blocking me from accessing that hole. any ideas?
can i just screw 3 and it will no leak? or maybe put epoxy ciment on the broken side.

Re: water pump bolt head broke
Can you get some vise grips on it? Angle head drill? Dremel?
Someone else here had to go with "3 remaining bolts plus" a little bit of RTV on the gasket (I'd use Hondabond or permatex ultra gray).
Probably would last for several years that way before the rubber gasket starts seeping

Re: water pump bolt head broke
its pretty much inside, i can see the tip but dunno how i could get it out, its such a tight place. Maybe i can go buy a tool to try and get it out, though i dunno what to buy. since its so tight space. in the worst case i could just put hondabond where there is no bolt all over and it should do the job i guess.
Re: water pump bolt head broke
Im at the store now and trying to figure out what to buy. I went to get a tube of hondabond and now looking at the dremels but no angle heads here.
Ill see how low I can get the engine down when I get back home. Ill try to hit it out with a small chisel or something. Gonna buy some left turns and see. Tight spot it is!

Re: water pump bolt head broke
I bought a Dremel 4200 and got a right angle attachment. How much time it would take to do a decent hole to put a left turn in it, the hole I started is not really in the middle and it's not that deep.
Re: water pump bolt head broke
I checked to see if I can do a hole from the wheel well. But the abs bracket bolt is just in front on the hole. Either if I get the engine block lower or higher. Im trying to still drill a hole with the dremel. Can I make a hole that's not in front of the hole I need to extract and try to extract it diagonally with a long drill extension. If I ever dmg the threads are they possible to redo with a thread tool?
Re: water pump bolt head broke
You may have to remove abs or drop the engine/transmission completely from the frame.
at least with the bolt extractors I've used and the lack of space I'm envisioning.

How does one get the abs thing off. Do I simply unscrew everything, the bracket all those metal hoses and that's it? Or need to be careful about something. And how do I get the engine down so low. Theres the belt wheel that blocks it from going down lower.
Thanks for your help guys.

yes you can remove them but brake fluid will probably come out,
if you remove any of the brake lines you will need to bleed the system after reconnecting them
Re: water pump bolt head broke
Ok cool.
Is there a time limit to leave antifreeze out of a cars system. Or its ok.
I get that bracket off that holds the abs pump and maybe try drilling a hole where it is. And then just try to put the bracket in a different place. Or make a new one. It's a really a shitty place to have a bolt head break.

leaving the antifreeze out for a bit is fine, just make sure you bleed out the air pockets properly

depending on which one it is, you may be okay without it,
when looking at the water pump, the least important bolt would be the top left one, because the pressure from the belt tension would be holding that corner down tight,
alternatively, the worst one would be the bottom right,
