Problem with my em2!...
Problem with my em2!...
i recently got a 2004 em2 ex... with my first tank of gas i did 370 miles and with my last 2 tanks ive done bearly 300... also the gas niddle goes down then up as im driving and when i turn on the car again it goes down... does anyone w\know what can be wrong?...:confused::confused:
Re: Problem with my em2!...
First off the needle guage is horribly inaccurate. When I drive slow it's telling me that my car is seemingly making gas, but we all know thats wrong unless that's honda's trade secret...
Anywho that portion is normal. With the change from 370 to 300 could be a lot of things, like do you weigh more? Is there more items in the trunk? If you have aftermarket parts, do they weigh more than the stock parts?
Also how is your driving? Do you rev it up and day dreaming that you're in a supercar? Or do you sit back and realize its an economy car and keep the RPMs low?
So many factors... not to mention a dirty car creates strong drag that does lower your MPG.
Quick recap on what can decrease MPG:
- AC is on
- Aftermarket parts IE(strut bars, subwoofers, exhaust systems, bigger wheels, etc)
- Dirty car
- You put on a body kit that is not aerodynamically better for the car, and may weigh more too.
- You are using a stronger alternator to power subs
- You are using more energy by having more electrical components that require a lot of energy (subs, amps, neon lights)
Last but not least, your ECU reset but you didn't let it relearn how to consume the gas. This was probably done when you disconnected the battery. So what do you think it is?

Re: Problem with my em2!...
its completly stock... no extra items are in the trunk or more weighted added to the car... i wash the car once a week... i dont rev it past 2500... i used cruise control alot too...i know its not for speed so i dont try and dream about something thats not going to happen... -__-... so idk what it can be... gas isnt keep i cant keep driving like this...
Re: Problem with my em2!...
One of the biggest factor really is what roads you are driving on. The tank where you did 370 miles, was that mostly highway and the 300 miles tank were they city? I average over 400km a tank with mix driving ive gone below that with pure city and ive pushed 600km on pure highway.
Re: Problem with my em2!...
well I only drive like mas 10 miles a day... i dont go pas 45... idk... my cousin said i should take it to honda and put the computer on it to see if somethings wrong?... what do you think?...
Re: Problem with my em2!...
Check Your Spark Plugs, Air Filter, Tire Pressure - There is a information on the tire just look for the (PSI). I think its like 35 or somethiing..
If every thing that i just said its fine, Then Check Your gas filter.. Also wut kind of octane u fill it up with?

I get 600km per tank easily on nearly pure city driving
Different driving styles I guess.
Re: Problem with my em2!...
Ive read that the 01s get a little worse mileage, i dont know why. I dont rev the car hard too, i always shift at the recommended shift points.
Another point too is how far you drive, your mpg wont be as efficient for the first few miles since your cat and engine has not reached its optimal temperature.
That could be why my mileage in the city sucks, i only work 8km from home from one job and 1.5km from my other.

Re: Problem with my em2!...
The fuel filter is actually on the outside of the tank I believe. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, it should be on the passenger side of the car, near the back tire.

Re: Problem with my em2!...
fuel filter is inside the tank actually, as part of the fuel pump. its a 4hr+ job to replace it. i had the same problem as the OP did, and turns out alot of these cars have a faulty fuel sending unit. i had times where the needle would read empty but i still had over 5 gallons in there. it would never be accurate until they changed the sensor. now its much better. also the road will mess up the gauge reading. if youre on flat ground, it will be very accurate, but on hilly ground where the car is not flat, the fuel reading will change.

Re: Problem with my em2!...
Same, my fuel light will come on and it only takes 8 gallons to get it to full soooo I had like another 5 still sitting in there. .....
edit: is there a diy for this or is it pretty hard and should be left to a dealership? also will it just start happening again after replacement?

Re: Problem with my em2!...
i had the dealer do mine, it involves taking out the fuel pump from the back seat (tell them to be careful and not spill gas all over like they did with mine). i would say its harder than the average diy job. i had mine fixed in 2003? i think and never had a problem since then. my car is a 2002.
Re: Problem with my em2!...
I know its not under the hood or anywhere close to the motor... Fuel filters are usually under the car by the fuel tank... But in the tank... Never heard of it.. Learn something new everyday...
