throttle cable

finally, i tightened my throttle cable today. it was a piece of cake and really makes the car much more fun to drive. if you have not done this yet, give it a try.

ok the simplest way to explain it is: move the 2 nuts 1/2 an inch to the left.

its not supposed to have a higher idle. thats bad. its supposed to be where if you slightly tap the throttle, the car responds very quickly.

It's different for every car. You need to adjust it so there's about 1/2 inch of slack when you push your finger down on the cable. Then after that much, it should start to pull the lever, and then the actual valve should open. The initial lever should be resting on metal and not being pulled by the cord at rest. If it does, your rpms are gonna stick when revving and on comes the cel.

You rev the engine and let go of the gas. Instead of smoothly dropping back to idle rpms, it stops around 1k for a few secs.

I guess I got real lucky because I adjusted it perfectly the first time. You're right, it made the car feel fun, almost like I put some mods in the engine! I can't believe how loose it was from the factory. This was one of the best tips I discovered here on this site so far.

It's really weird how our throttle cables are so loose but my dad's '99 EX has the recommended 1/2 inch of slack and he's never adjusted his t-cable.

Yeah when I first went to tighten mine, it had almost 2 inches of slack and was drooping down!

Ditto. The difference in throttle responsiveness is night and day after you do the adjustment.

SHould it still be tightened if you take out the part under the gas pedal? It lets you push down more on the gas. It seems like if I did both, I might snap the cable? Not sure, does anybody know what I am talking about? there is a black pieve under the gas pedal that you can remove.

PM me please somebody

I'd be really careful about doing that. With the stock tension you might be fine but if you take up the slack and try to go Wide Open Throttle you could risk snapping the throttle cable.

It's the one closer to the steering wheel that you adjust. The one further away from the front of the car. The other is for cruise control.

Yeah, if you're working on your engine from the driver's side, it's the cable on the right (closer to the back end of the car). Just watch your idle rpm's -- it shouldn't be much of a problem but better to keep an eye on it. Mine idles at ~800 now, but I like the responsiveness a lot more.
