Smudge on passenger's window

I just bought a 1999 Honda Civic for my daughter. I bought an identical 99 for my son earlier in the year. Both vehicles have a smudge or residue on the inside corner of the passenger side window which covers the view of the side mirror. I took my son's smudge off with naptha but it has come back and when we had it in for a ding on the door, the body shop said it was a part that cost about $400. I didn't get to talk to him so I don't know what this part is. In both vehicles the windows have an aftermarket tint job that came with the car. Since both vehicles have the same problem I thought it might be something that has been identified. Any help would be appreciated.

Is that a layer of grease of some sort?

Re: Smudge on passenger's window

It's not grease as it doesn't wipe away easily. It is more like a residue that you get when you take tape off of something.

Did you try removing the door panel and seeing if there's some type of tape or grease that is being exposed to the window when it is rolled down?

^ I'm thinking your window liner some how is getting stuck when your window moves and its wiping the tacky adhesive on there.

I was hoping to avoid having to remove the door panel but that may be the only solution. I thought that since this happened on both Civics, it might be a know problem.

Ya, likely that gray tacky stuff that holds the plastic door liner to the metal. Someone probably replaced the speakers in those cars and ****ed them up.
