wouldnt it be better to wire it to your parking lights?

Agree with parking lights instead of headlights. The headlights work by providing common power and grounding to illuminate them. The wire that would have +12 volts with the parking lights on would be RED/YELLOW.

A good source for LED info is LEDs - LSDiodes Optoelectronics

I'm doing this too but I'm splicing off the cigarette lighter and putting in a switch. I wouldn't want that hooked up to headlights.

I actually installed a relay, then pulled the 12V for the switch off of the lighter. That way the lights are on there own circuite. My install was on an undercar kit though.

nah, that wouldn't have much to do with it. It'd be easier to splice into your cigarette lighter power source, and hook up a switch. come by and I'll show you mine that I got done bro.

Ive found the easiest and best way to do leds is to run a separate cable off of the fuse terminal (12 gauge should do it) directly to a switch. All the leds in the world will not draw enough amperage to warrant a relay.

Then, take out your gauge bezel, and drill a 5mm hole in one of the lower corners and put a low powered led there as an indicator light.

Now, you will not be restricted. You will be able to turn your lights on and off at will, without starting the vehicle. And you will have a reminder when you turn your car off that the light is still on. I have done that and to date, never forgotten to turn my lights off.

Also, be sure to fuse the power supply you use, no matter where it comes from. Hot wires can turn into a fire real quick. And burnt wire insulation is an aweful smell to get out of your car.
