Shifter has resistance moving side to side only and struggles to return from reverse.
I have a 2018 FWD Civic EX-T with a 6-Speed manual transmission and the 1.5l Earth Dreams engine.
I shifted my civic from 1st to reverse very quickly. This caused the reverse gear to catch very loud and hard.
Ever since this happened my shifter has increased resistance only when moving side to side. Moving from 1st to 2nd feels smooth as butter like normal behavior. Same goes for 3-4 and 5-6.
It's not a ton of resistance side to side, but it's enough that the shifter will not recenter itself on its own. To be specific, it almost makes it back to center (neutral) but you just have to nudge it slightly.
However if you move the shifter to reverse.
Internally in the transmission, It sometimes struggles to connect to the reverse gear. Allowing the car to move a slight amount though you can feel the reverse gear slip in and lock through the vibration in the shifter. It is very finicky however and takes several tries sometimes.
Trying to move the shifter from reverse back into neutral requires you to fight the shifter. There is a lot of resistance and usually requires you to wiggle it in a circle for it to come back.
I have diagnosed that this is not a linkage problem or a problem with the shifter itself, but something internal. Looking for opinions on what others may think this could be.
The car drives fine and shifts fine. No noise comes from the transmission and it rides smooth as butter.
Below is a top down view into the transmission.
All I know is the problem seems to be beyond here.

Re: Shifter has resistance moving side to side only and struggles to return from reve
Did you ever get this figured out? My shifter on a 2016 2.0l is hard to move left and right and it's definitely coming from the inside of the transmission because when I move the left and right shifter arm on the transmission disconnected from the cable it's stiff and notchy unlike the up and down shifter arm. Also now it occasionally grinds letting the clutch out to engage reverse. I might have been too aggressive with shifting, lol.
