shifting trouble, need help asap...

so on my way to work today i noticed my shifter feeling a little bit loose/yest tough to shift and hard to find the gears. i took out my center console to investigate the shifter cables, and everything appears to be fine.. but the biggest and strangest problem im finding is that if you pull the shifter down to 2nd, 4th or reverse gear, you can pull the gear stick back further than its supposed to it seems, putting the tranny in neutral.. you can wiggle the gear stick just like its normally in neutral... yet its pulled all the way back where its supposed to be 2nd, 4th, or reverse..

Sorry if it sounds really confusing, but it really got me bugged. i can hardly find reverse with the shifter messed up. has anyone else had this problem?
