No Gear Pattern, Please Read

Okay, so my friend called me this morning in need of my help with his 03' civic. I am a Prelude owner so he thought I might have an idea of what to do. He had his car parked on an incline and had trouble putting it into reverse so he pulled a little harder than normal to get the transmission (5 speed) to shift back into reverse and when he pulled there was a pop. After the pop he couldn't put his car into any gear. His car no longer has any gear pattern at all. You can move the shifter in a circle or where ever you want and not catch anything. He did mention that his shifter has tension from left to right, but no tension forwards and backwards. For as long as I have worked on vehicles I have never heard of anything like this. So if anyone has any idea at all it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

something has come loose or disconnected between the shifter and the tranny.....you are going to need to jack the car up, crawl underneath, and inspect

You inspect the shifter cable from the top of the car. If you remove the center console you will find 2 sets of cables leading to the tranny from the shifter. Check the connections at the shifter and the connections on the top of the tranny. Sounds like the cable or shifter broke.

You can see the cables a little here:
