odometer fraud
Hey, how would you know if anyone is doing odometer fraud(like stopping their odometer reading). I wanted to buy a used car and I want to know how to find this out...
Any info regarding odometer fraud, post it here please. Thanks.

digital odometer its a lot harder to stop or adjust milage but if its regular style odometer if it was messed with you can tap top of dash right above odometer and if numbers jiggle Guess what its been adjusted. Also some people who do their own service on the car and dont take it to dealer who records milage after a while they go to junk jard and buy odometer with less miles. so be carefull. Its pretty hard to screw with an electronic odo... the ECU keeps track.

I'd say it doesn't since ECU stands for Emissions Control Unit, I'd say all it does is takes the RPM's of the engine and controls air flow and fuel flow based in that, called a fuel map...I don't think it has anythign to do with Mileage....

So basically, the way to check is run a vehicle report using the vin. How does the vehicle history report able to get that info if the owner of the car changes his own oil and everything? Is that always accurate or will I be able to get ripped off regardless of the Vin number checkup?

First of all, the ECU stands for Engine Control Unit.
Secondly, any time you service your car at the dealer, smog it, or do any maintenance at any one of many locations, your mileage is noted. As for the numbers jiggling when you tap your dash, that only happens if it's done the wrong way. You might also see a line thru the numbers, it's quite thin so look carefully. Many manufacturers use that as a sign of tampering.
Oh, and the ECU doesn't keep track. That's a mith. If you disconnect the speedometer cable and run your car, and then reconnect it, you will notice your mileage hasn't changed. The memory is only kept in the odo itself.

Yeah, I was under the impression that OBD-II (on board diagnostics) kept track of milage. Thats what the wierd looking 'port' is under the drivers side of the dash of every car made in the last 10 years. I could be wrong though.

There is a chip attached to the Odometer that counts up, to change it you need to purchase a new chip. to get a new chip, you first need to find out what type of chip it is, and serch for that same chip at an electronics store (Some Manufacturers use Generic chips) or some how aquire one from the factory (Highly Improbable). Now that you have the blank chip, you need to program it to accept the cars signals and interprit them properly (requireing special equipment) so with an electronic odometer, it is not impossable, just improbable due to it being such a pain in the *** to do.
