Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
I was driving home yesterday and my check engine light came on. Now i've had the check maintenance light come on and thats because of oil change and what not. However when i looked this one up in the manuel it said it has something to do with the emissions system. I'd put gas in several days before so i confirmed to make sure my gas cap was on tight(b/c manuel referenced that as a problem), also recently i had a bad cat replaced. What could it possibly be that is causing this? Any ideas to save me from taking it to the dealer?
Yeah I had that happen to me a while back. Every time I turned my car on, it would flash a certain number of times. But The dealer knows what to do. Just wait until your next checkup. I did a minor maintenance checkup at 16,000 (more than just an oil change, basically prepping my car for warmer weather) and it stopped afterward. The light goes off probably as a reminder for a checkupor like you said, oil change. There's no sense in bringing in your car just to get that light checked-up, you'd be wasting your money and they'd gladly take it from you.

how many miles do you have on your car, is it past 10,000. Because after you pass that amount the light comes on and stays on. There is instructions in your car manual on how to rest that light.
ok, he said it wasn't flashing when you turn the engine on - that's a simple warning reminding you to get your oil changed and get a tune up - easilly corrected by pushing in on the mileage reset button, starting the car and holding it for about 30 seconds to be safe, and then turn the car off. Next time you turn the car on, the maintenance light won't blink ..
However, if it just came on and stayed on while you were driving, then it's probably like you said, some emissions problem - after all you looked it up in the manual and would know. Thank goodness there are still SOME people who do the work and don't just post simple problems without at least making some amount of effort.
ANYways, if it's something more serious, like a bad cat-converter that you mentioned, the best idea would be to take it in and have the dealer check it out.
Good luck with that man, hope it's nothing too serious or expensive ...

some of you have to read before you post. He said CHECK ENGINE LIGHT not MAINTENANCE LIGHT!!
If you don't want to take it to Honda right away and the car sounds like it is running fine, you can try to reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery for about 10min. Sometimes if the a code is thrown for the gas cap thing, it might not go off. Try resetting your ECU first and if it still comes on, take it to honda for a full ECU code check.

I had the same problem with my car,
take it to the dealership to get it checked out, cuz it may still be underwarranty. My problem was some thing wasnt sealed tight enuf and liquid in a pipe was causing the light to come on. He said it was the manufacturers fault. So check it with the dealership

since posting i wasn't quite up for throwing money out to the dealer yet, so i reset my mass airflow sensor and since then the light has not returned. So it appears i have solved the problem or atleast for the time being

My Maint Required light blinks about 5 times after I start the car. a few weeks ago was the first time I changed my own oil, so I guess that may be the case. I guess I should just push that button, unless you guys say otherwise...
This is what I did when mine came on. I went to autozone, if you don't have one in your area, find some place that has one of those things that logs onto your onboard computer, and they will give you the code to the problem. Afterwards, just call you honda service and ask them what that code means. Mine was due to a loose gas cap. The thing though is even after several days, the light didn't go off. To fix the problem, all I did was unplugged my battery for several minutes, I don't know if the time its unplugged matters, and when I connected everything back up, the light was off. If the light comes on again, then it is probably a seal or something, but chances are it was caused by the gas cap.
autozone is where i go, theres hundreds of reasons for that light to come on,some are pretty stupid, but i would have them check it to be safe before you reset it. Anyways it doesn't cost anything besides five minutes of your time.
I have had this light on for a week.
When I had unplugged and plugged battery for a min then light went off.
But after two days it came back to on state
today I "resetted" it again and I don't know for how long.
my car has just 44k ml, but I already run out of warranty
in my area San Jose, CA no one store reads the code - I came to autozone too.
anything I can do by myself until go to Honda and pay $50+ for diagnostics check?
tnx

If you still have warranty left, than run several ECU reports from different dealers if you want a peace of mind. This is my $0.02 to you.

mine is on but it's because i have a downpipe hehe (02 simulator is getting work on). Check your o2 sensors to see if it's loose or anything. Try replugging it and reset the ECU...do the bottom one of the cat.
