Purchased an 08 Civic 1.8L 5sp in Fall 2024 w/ 108K miles and currently 122K miles. Since purchased, at test drive, I noticed throttle response was poor and thought it just needed a set of plugs. According to previous owner paperwork, plugs had been replaced at 80K. At 110K replaced plugs and did not really improve throttle response. At 115K, MAF went out so replaced and throttle improved a bit but symptoms still present. I did some research and decided to replace EGR Valve, and throttle response improved, but symptoms persist.

I was getting on the freeway, pressed hard on the accelerator, and the engine instantly lost power and acceleration was sluggish.

Felt as if the timing had been retarded.

1. Hesitation/Sluggish Acceleration happen ONLY when Car has reached Operating Temperature

2. Between 2300 – 2700 RPMs

3. Goes Away after 3000 RPMs

4. Feels like a misfire but no Engine Codes



I change my oil every 2500 miles using 5-20w. Previous owner records show engine oil changes every 5K miles.



Anyone familiar with this problem?

I would definitely clean your throttle body it’s pretty easy to get to. Only when at operating temp is odd, it runs perfectly normal cold? o2 sensors could certainly be an issue as well. Also since that power loss getting on the freeway, were you able to continue driving afterward, does it still start and run?
