Sticky Throttle - '98 Civic DX

The throttle response is sticky for lack of better description as you give it throttle
Not 100% but most of the time
More noticeable when driving in town stop light to stop light
When it is sticky it makes it very difficult to feather the throttle past the sticking point. Which makes for an interesting take off

I have already cleaned the throttle body throat & butterfly valve of any carbon build up, but it didn't help

The IAC valve was replaced 15k ago with a NAPA unit (should have bought Honda OEM i guess), but uncertain if that has anything to do with this problem

A friend gave me a used complete intake manifold & throttle body assembly and suggested that I try swapping the throttle body & IAC valve assemblies

Worth a try or not?

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks

Re: Sticky Throttle - '98 Civic DX

Use your fingers. On YOUR throttle body. Does it stick?

If it works fine with your fingers but not with the pedal, then its the cable or pedal, and I haven't ever seen any problems with the pedals.

If it sticks when using your fingers, then either
it still has carbon causing the butterfly to hang closed,
someone jacked the throttle stop and it is hanging up in the bore,
or the shaft bushings are worn.

I will do as you suggested and report back

Re: Sticky Throttle - '98 Civic DX

I checked everything out tonight and found that there was excessive slack in the throttle cable where it attaches to the throttle body
All other items seemed good
Just guessing that when previous owner replaced the IAC valve he left too much slack
So, I adjusted the slack out and had no issues on my test drive

There is suopposed to be SOME slack. You don't want any chance of the cable holding the throttle open when your foot is off of the gas pedal.

I left a tad of slack in the cable and the butterfly is definitely closed against the stop
Now the cable goes tight just before opening the butterfly

Before I took out the slack the cable had a noticeable droop & slack and it took a quite a bit before the cable tightened enough to open the butterfly

Does this sound ok?

Thanks

Re: Sticky Throttle - '98 Civic DX

Sure.
I guess what really matters is that the throttle goes wide open when the gas pedal is mashed to the floor, without trying to stretch the cable out to do it.

If there isn't enough slack when the throttle is closed, then the cable will get stretched when the pedal is floored. Make sense?

Makes total sense
I will double checked the cable with pedal to the floor just to make sure
Thanks
