Squealing noise when starting car

I've looked around online and come to the conclusion that the very loud squealing noise I'm hearing must be coming from the alternator belt being a little loose. Supposedly that is common in the winter as it gets pretty cold.

Anyways, I'm not much of a car guy and don't have any experience working under the hood other than jumping the car a few times. How hard is it to adjust the alternator in order to tighten the belt? and how would I do that?

Before I do too much work, I should ask, would spraying a little WD-40 on the belt have any effect? hoping for an easy solution to the problem.

Re: Squealing noise when starting car

if you try to do it, don't leave any of the bolts loose. Check the next day, another after a week.
(Loose alternator bolts fry the ECU, it will be expensive if you screw that one)

There's most likely a YouTube on how to do the belts. Make sure all the bolts are tight or you will fry the ecu.

I'd check the power steering belt first. That acted up on mine and was pretty bad at idle before I fixed it.

Re: Squealing noise when starting car

Along with the above suggestions, there is an alternator adjustment bolt that can become stripped and will need to be replaced - been there done that.

Re: Squealing noise when starting car

Don’t spray WD40 on it unless you wants to make it worse. The belt is slipping so you need to add friction to the belt.

If it’s suppose to move and doesn’t use WD40
If it’s moving and it’s not suppose to duct tape or JBWeld
