Tires and Rotation for 2015 Civic EX
Tires and Rotation for 2015 Civic EX
Our son's 2015 Civic EX Sedan has Hankook Optimo H426, 205/55/16 tires on it. We have 5 tires (we got 2 used tires after a pothole damange one of the original tires). The car has about 20,000 miles on it.
The tread depth on these is as follows.
L/F 6/32
R/F 8/32
BOTH REAR 5/32
TRUNK 7/32
I had a few questions and could use some expert advice.
- Should I get a wheel, have the 5th tire mounted, and replace one of the existing?
- Is a 5 tire rotation scheme a good idea?
- How much longer do these tires have based on tread depth values?
- Are Hankook decent tires or, for replacements, should I look at other brands? I have gotten General AltiMax R43 for our other son's car - a Mazda 3. Let me know your ideas.
- What is the best inflation pressure to use?
- A mechanic told me to always keep the best tires on the rear wheels of a front-wheel drive car.
Is this what I should be doing?
Thanks!
Mike

Re: Tires and Rotation for 2015 Civic EX
Hankook makes good tires, I have a set of Hankook snow tires for my car and they work awesome.
Inflate them to whatever the sticker on the driver's doorjamb says, can go a pound or two higher if you want.
I personally wouldn't bother with a 5 tire rotation, keep it as a spare.
How long they'll last depends on how much driving you do.

Hankook are great tires, I have had some in the past. 5th tire rotation is up to you.
Tread depth, I have no idea. What’s the distance between penny lip and Abe’s head lol?
I don’t set to door jamb but I also don’t run stock size or type of tire. Follow door jamb though.
I thought for FWD car the front is where you wanted the best tires (if you have to choose). Power and steering are controlled from the front the back just come along for the ride.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Lawyers want the best tires on the rear.
This doesn't work worth a damn when it comes to tire wear on a FWD vehicle

rotate as usual, get even wear and replace all four at same time.
and that recommendation is on tire shops...
