Valve Lash keeps changing d17a1

Someone please break this down for me, why the valve lash would dramatically change? So I rebuilt a cylinder head, and did the valve lash myself went back and double checked the lash and everything changed. So I called my buddy up to come over and double check things. He did the valve lash and everything was in spec once again. Fired up the engine heard a knocking sound which I thought was, rod knock. Pulled the pan checked the rod-ends for play, 0 play.

So anyhow took the block down to the machine shop to get everything double checked. Machine shop is going to be doing the following on the block.
DECKING THE BLOCK
HONE
Mic’n the crank & polishing
New Bearings and Rings

So with all the work done to the block in a few days, I’m sure I can rule out rod knock. So why do you guys think the valve lash clearance changes so much? They opened from all the way to 40 thou on some of the valves.

you adjusted the valves when engine was cold (below 100F) right? also even if you adjust them properly with the feeler gauge, when you tighten the lock nut it will cause the clearance to change by a small but noticable amount. Experienced valve adjusters take this into account and know how to compensate.

Adjusted the valve lash once i got the head back from the machine shop (outside temp 74F). I'm under wondering if TDC is off. Should you adjust it when the cam it's self actually stops. You know how it has all that pressure from the valve train that when you rotate the cam it turns super fast with no load, and then stops all of a sudden? you get what i mean.

TDC UP Arrow with the little tick marks on the left and right of the cam, and then adjust in firing order. It's not our first rodeo by the way.
