I have a 2000 Civic LX which has done 75k miles. I was told by the dealer to have my timing belt replaced as it is more than 7 years, even though mileage is less. Should I replace it now or wait for 105k miles? It is pretty expensive at the dealership, at around $500. At the same time, if it is a must do now, I can think about it. Any suggestions are welcome.

I say go for it, I find alot of people change it at 80k even before 7 years. $500 for parts and labor isnt too bad

well the newer 01+ civics say 10 yrs or 100k miles, so idk. maybe wait a few more years? it mostly depends on the climate. if you live in humid area where there isnt alot of severe hot/cold, you should be fine for 10 yrs. also you might be able to peek at the belt from under the car to see what condition its in.

yes you should replace it. its better safe then sorry.

if ur timing belt snaps....u gotta rebuid ur engine, and that willl cost you thousands...

I'd do it. I had mine done a few months ago and my car only had about 67,000 miles at the time. However, it's a 97, so 11 years is quite a bit of time. I just hit 72,000 miles this week.

when you replace ur timing belt, it is also smart to replace:

water pump, belt tensioner, power steering belt, AC belt, and soem gaskets and seals

they are all in the same area, so you should replace those as well...

you should be spending somewhere aorund 400 bucks for the total job. thats how much it is, and its a the BIG maintenance you do for ur car.

had one hop a couple teeth on my 99 prelude with 60 thousand on it and 6 years after six years the belts tend to go regardless of the mileage. and $500 is cheap for timing belt if you have the dealership do it they usually charge at least $700 if not a $1000. Honda also charges a thousand just to pull the head if it goes. look at about $3500 from honda if you loose the belt.

Exactly. Get it all done, and you'll be good for a long while.

Just a heads-up though. The dealer is probably gonna charge anywhere from 700-1200 for all of that (maybe more). You could go with other shops or mechanics, but make sure they're reputable and know what they're doing lol.

no, stealership is 600-1200

any good and reputable mech shop will do it for 400ish with all the corect parts.


150 sounds like he didnt do much except for changing ur timing belt.

timing belt, power steering belt, AC belt, tensioner, water pump, gaskets, seals alone cost more than 150. oem or aftermarket.
