2008 Civic DX-A Remote Starter

Hello All,

I will be purchasing a 2008 Civic DX-A. The car does not have remote starter/door-locks. Could you guys please recommend a garage in Ottawa where I can get that, and at what cost? Things I am looking for are:

1. Remote Start, Keyless entry, Alarm System
2. By installing the starter, am I going to void the Honda warranty on the car?

A DX doesn't have power locks at all, right? Bummer. Best way I know of to get power locks is to install LX/EX door latches, and run all new wiring for them.
Buy an LX or EX, and put a remote start in that instead.

The car is 5 years old...What warranty?

Some kids can make a colossal mess out of a dash wiring harness. You wouldn't believe some of the things I have seen non-car people do over the years.
Others do a fantastic job with wires.

Basically, if your aftermarket parts installation is found to be the cause of your complaints, then that's YOUR baby since it is not a factory defect. Pay the checkout charge. Return to your installer.

Extended warranty service contracts are a crapshoot. Google yours and read about complaints.

Well with my current budget I can only afford a DX-A. Moreover it has far less mileage than some other cars at the dealer. About warranties, this one still has one more comprehensive year on it. The dealership has offered me two additional years, I am thinking whether to take the extra two comprehensive or not.

So, power locks are not as easy as I thought eh? If I had spent about 1000 bucks more, I would have got a dx-g but that would have double the mileage and no warranty. That's why I was wondering how much it would cost to get power locks, remote entry, and remote start. I am a novice so DIY is a no-no for me now.

Check with some local AM installers. See if the aftermarket has a speedy solution for this, I know you aren't the only one that wants this.

This guy has a thread going too, same car same issue: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...ess-entry.html

I myself haven't figured an easy way to mod the factory cables between the latches and handles. I think factory LX/EX latches that incorporate the power lock motors are the way to go, but then you still have to run your own wiring for them.

Catalog (USA) lists OE accessory remote start kit for LX/EX, but not DX.

Re: 2008 Civic DX-A Remote Starter

So a bit of Googling around brought these two shops:

1. http://www.ultimateautomotive.ca/index.html
2. http://www.derand.com/RemoteStarters.html

I don't yet know how much they are going to charge for the following changes:

1. Remote start w/ alarm
2. Keyless entry

Anyone has any thoughts about these shops and how much they might charge?

according to you, my car needs to have power locks for the keyless entry. BTW, does this mean that the car doors won't automatically lock when driving?

Well, duh. The door locks can't run on just wishful thinking.

I'm in the USA.
I am not familiar with options in Canadian market cars, but a DX here does not come with power locks.
Does the car have power locks right now?
I was assuming it does not, and you did not state otherwise.

You MUST have power locks before anyone can make any keyless entry system work.
They don't have to be factory, but there must be power locks of some type installed the car.
IDK if aftermarket has a solution for this particular car that is easy and cheap.
I personally think that an OEM P/L setup is usually easiest to work with....

Ask your installer.

hmm, looks like I gotta get power locks first, then the whole remote thingy. Any ballpark figure on how it might cost? what about the US? I might start asking AM dealers around based on the US price.

Re: 2008 Civic DX-A Remote Starter

There seems to be two schools of thought on this issue.

1. Install OEM power locks from Honda. Then install remote start+keyless entry.
2. Install aftermarket "actuators" rather than OEM, and install remote start+keyless entry.

I am currently torn between the two choices. Obviously the 2nd one would cost less but I would like to know the actual cost (kit+labour). Anyone got a hint?

Did you read the thread I linked here?

This guy already tried the cheaper non-factory lock actuators in his door and couldn't make it work right.
He also has some discussion on (USA) prices on OE door latches in the thread.

I strongly suggest you inquire with your local car alarm installer if you really want to know what can be done with yours and how much it will cost.
Or just make an appointment and drop the car off at their shop, then hand over your credit card when they are done.

I personally don't deal with aftermarket installs unless it is one of my own cars or family.
