turbo doesn't spin
whats up everyone....i blew the seals in my turbo and bought a rebuild kit and did it myself. i have a precision sc-34 and also decided to changed the compressor housing and wheel to a gt37 housing and wheel....the turbo spins perfectly on my work bench when i blow compressed air through it(like 120psi) however as soon as i start the car the turbo freezes up and wont spin...it seems that the oil pressure has something to do with it.... i pulled the drain off lastnight and started it and oil comes out fine so i know i am getting oil to the turbo and back to the pan with no problems...just cant figure out why the damn thingwont spin..... anyone got any ideas....

Is it possible when you tighten down the mounting bolts and clamps the housing gets distorted and binds bearings or vanes? Keep checking the vanes after each step as you install the turbo to see what you do that binds them up.

uuuhn, wouldn't be so sure - if that, the wheel would not spin when on the bench. maybe play? under pressure the wheel ***** to one side and lock itself? don't know much about turbos, though...

Re: turbo doesn't spin
did you get it balanced after assembly? and im not quite sure how putting 120psi of compressed air on the bench will tell you anything when it only sees 8-20psi on the car. im willing to bet the bearings are worn out and causing the shaft to go out of balance. when you put it on the car, it tilts over and scrapes instead of spinning. anyway bottom line is if the turbo doesnt spin, it wasnt rebuilt properly. and i wouldnt drive the car like that at all or you will have bigger problems. if youve never rebuilt turbo before, i would recommend finding someone who has and get some pointers. its not as easy as buying an ebay kit and replacing the parts. how old is this turbo? when you spin it with your hand, does it stay spinning for a few seconds? is there any play in the turbine from side to side? could also be you got a poor quality rebuild kit. here are some links that might help

no didn't balance it...thats prob the problem....the bearings are brand new but maybe i bought a crappy rebuild kit.... there is no shaft play and when i spin it with my hands yes it spins a few seconds before it stops on it own..... turbo is prob 3-4 years old... never rebulit a turbo before thats why i decided to throw a post up here to see what people who knew what they were talking about thought....and im not that retarded where i am driving the car like this lol thaks for the links i will check them out tomm

Re: turbo doesn't spin
no worries man. im not saying youre retarded, just wanted to make sure you dont make the problem worse by driving it lol. sometimes the shaft needs a few runs to "break in" the new bearings which are softer, and then it will start turning normally. the shaft is stronger and will have some slight imperfection, so thats why initially it may not sit properly against the bearings. if there is no shaft play then you are prolly safe rebuilding it.

Re: turbo doesn't spin
yeah it needs to be balanced to spin properly. it may also require a break-in procedure for the bearings which possibly can be done off the car. ive heard of bad rebuild kits that can cause problems too. where did you get yours?
Re: turbo doesn't spin
gotcha...makes sense....got it from e-bay....forgot the name but it wasn't the cheapest one nor was it the most expesive but was brand new
