Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Cool, yeah, I wanted to do something and keep it clean but that turbine puts off some serious heat. Where did you pick it up?

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

I think I got the kit from jegs. The turbo wrap blanket they give you is enough to do like 10 turbine housings, hehe. I think I got the thermotec stuff.

Got the old hunk of crap out tonight. Gonna scavenge some parts off it tomorrow and get to jamming the other one in there. Still waiting on my flywheel though.

Can't wait to see it! Between you and Boiler building some serious engines, I'm going to want an 800hp nitrous shot just to feel better about my car!

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

I figure that after 350-400 more power would be useless on drag radials. I might crank it up on the dyno to see what it'll do and have the maps for it, but I doubt I'd ever be rolling around with more than that. Thats enough to break into the 11s with real good driving. Its also enough to break lots of driveline components, haha.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

hey i just read this thread up to this page. i was looking at exhaust mani and it LOOKS to have alot of curves and turns..is that a good thing or bad thing? will having more bends and curves kind of restrict the flow of air? or will that help it flow better...is that a back pressure thing? i know u know what ur doing im just asking cuz i honestly dont know...what would be the ideal manifold design, if it were completely possible? ..............subscribed

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Well there are a lot of factors and variables in a manifold design. In my case, I wanted the turbo in a certain spot and in order to get the runners close to equal length, it took that many elbows. The idea is to make the transitions smooth and not to use tight radius bends. There are various way to make collectors, as well as merge angles and such. If the exhaust housing has a divided inlet you can get better spool-up and maybe some better numbers and what not if the collector is divided and your runners are placed correct. These are generalizations and just a few basic ideas, the list goes on. To answer the question about the header tubes being long, its not going to hurt performance because the exhaust pulses end up smoother and stronger than if you used a log style because basically they dont lose as much velocity/energy bouncing off the manifold walls and each other as well. Look at race cars, those are the best places to get ideas.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Oh yea, I got my new radiator all modified this morning and the mounts made up. Just need to weld em in, maybe tomorrow or something. Ordered a nice IC a couple days ago. I'll post pics of that crap once the IC gets here.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Well actually its still a challenge and very time consuming to do this but I spread the budget over about a year for the new parts and the planning/desire to do this was in effect long before. The car was together before and I was driving it while gathering and planning. Not including labor I'll probably have about $7k in this car minus the actual cost of the car, which is still less than just the motor of the shop car alone. Im having a lot of fun putting this car together and you cant put a price on that. Im not really building it to show off or top anyone. Im putting it together for myself, for the challenge, and to be different. It gives me a chance to dig deep and express my creative side. To me that matters more then standing next to it at a car show waiting for compliments. I never will build a car the way I think someone else will like it. I do my own thing and Im happy with it. I know too many people that build cars with no heart, no sentimental value. The budget is irrelevant to me as long as I enjoy it. Life isnt a test drive, gotta live a little.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Did you end up staying with the Y8 rotating assembly for it? I hope so, and also hope it works for you as I have my hopes pinned on that to have more options when I build my bottom end. As soon as the block arrives anyway......still waiting for it.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

I did end up still using the y8 stuff. Everything went together ok. Valve clearance is a lil tighter due to the fact that the pistons do come up about flush with the deck as opposed to about an estimated .040 below with the A2 gut. I used low compression pistons and decked the head to get my compression about 9.2:1. I didnt want to be below 9:1 with this turbo. Even with the head decked there was plenty of valve clearance because the aftermarket pistons had deeper reliefs. It was nice to finally have the two motors out of the car at the same time. It gave me a chance to double check myself.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Excellent, excellent news. Be great to see pics and a dyno chart when you get it all together and tuned. I'm just waiting and waiting for the block to arrive so I can get it checked out and start cobbling together the parts to stuff it with.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Yeah I'll definetely have all the data when Im done. I am hoping to have the car tuned at Trick Engineering again if they have the time, not sure if I trust anyone else to touch it at this point. Most of the local tuners are hackers. Its worth trailering the car out of state to have them do it.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Woke up at 7 this morning(no work) to a box on the doorstep. Got my IC from FedEx bright and early and it inspired me to do some tinkering. I put in the lower radiator mount and started tacking the D pipe together. I only had the stick welder so the tacks aren't pretty but Ill clean em up when I get to welding it.

The IC is a treadstone unit 3.5" thick bar and plate core rated to around 500 hp.

Now that's what I call custom. Nice half-rad job. It sure makes things easier when you have the right tools. I can't wait to get back to the states to buy my welder and rest of the tools I can't run over here.

^^^ to run 1320 feet, i dont think he'll have a problem.

Even on the highway it should be ok, that one looks like a double thick core.

I probably wouldnt take it road racing though.

Gerry.... one suggestion, especially since you'll probably be looking at slightly higher coolant temps..... put an oil cooler in.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

yeah Im only gonna be running hard for short distances. We ran the h22 accord with one of these with a smaller grille opening to 450whp so I know it will cool it. Definetely couldnt road race but for regular driving ive seen 600+whp hatches running these. Its a 2" core so Im not worried. I may also vent the hood similar to what the s2k guys do, only with the two front triangles instead.

Boiler, I think I will take that suggestion. After I get the car tuned that will be on top of the mod list. You would know. Its cheap insurance anyways.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

Its not on its side, its a half-radiator. I imagine he put a half rad in since on a top-mount mani, the WG would not fit with a full length radiator in there.

Re: My New Turbo Set-Up Thread

foos is correct. Its from a previous gen civ. It needed lots of mods to fit in there but I just didnt quite have enough room with the other radiator. Its twice as thick as stock but half as wide. The IC isnt in there yet, maybe tomorrow I'll make mounts.

ahh...and since its twice as thick but half the size it shoudl still function properly and efficiently right?
