My 1st start-up with turbo...
My 1st start-up with turbo...
Hey guys, i just started my car for the first time yesterday and i just added some denso iridium spark plugs, rsx injectors, and an e-manage that is greddy tuned at 8psi with dezod's plug and play harness. Everything seems to be running right and my car idles as it should but when i rev up my engine to about 2000 rpm, my turbo starts to smoke. I don't know if that is usual since it is a new running turbo because i know that is usual when you get a new exhaust put on. I dunno, if anyone knows, please help me out. Also, my engine check light is on but i think that is only because i don't have my o2 sensors plugged in yet because i need to get dezod's o2 bungs welded to my downpipe but if you think it might be something else, please let me know. But other than that, I think I am going to try to drive it today (normal driving conditions).

Thick smoke or just burn off? More than likely its just burn off, oil from your hands and whatnot. It just stop soon after being driven. Double check your oil lines too, make sure they aren't leaking. Turbos get so hot that it actually cleans the metals of impurities which is why you see some turbos and manifolds that look rusted.
I recommend you get an scan tool, Autozone has them for pretty cheap. You shouldnt need anything too fancy, just something to read and erase codes. It can help you trouble shoot issues alot easier then driving it out and talking to the dumbasses about whats going on.
Goodluck!

yeah, it's not thick smoke at all, i checked the oil lines and gladly to say, there are no leaks. I guess I'm going to try to drive it for the 1st time today to autozone and fill up it up with more 93 octane. Thanks for the help, i thought something went wrong due to the smoke.

light, whitish looking smoke is normal... thats just crap burning off. Kinda smells like something burning in the kitchen. oil burning in there is gonna smell like oil.... and the tail pipe would likely be blue. At least get the primary O2 sensor plugged in, give the engine some clue about what its doing so you dont flood it out.
well... i have a problem, i did find an oil leak today where it was tapped at but i fixed that. Also, when i plugged in my e-manage today, my car is idling at 2500 rpm. Now, i need to drive this to the exhaust shop a.s.a.p., which is hopefully tomorrow to get my new turbo-back exhaust put on and have the o2 bungs welded on. Is it safe to drive it if it is idling at 2500 rpm if I drive under normal conditions? Let me know what you guys think.
Oh yeah, the smoke stopped after about 10 minutes of running the turbo.

no, i just wanted to upgrade to a 2.5" all the way back and also, i had a custom downpipe made since i pieced my kit together and I have to get my exhaust system to fit that downpipe

2500 sounds stupid high. I'd drive incredibly carefully or have AAA tow it to the shop. With no A/F reading at all, you have no idea how much gas is going through. An excess will wash out the rings, and not enough and you may not make it to the shop.
I personally would NOT drive the car without any A/F monitoring. Definitely keep it out of boost, the car should have a default limp mode program to get you some place.
If after you have O2's hooked up, your idle doesnt drop, check your wiring, the vaccum readings and what not, start finding a problem.

Well... I don't know what I did but i started my car today and it was idling below 1000 rpm (constant) and not sputtering which made me happy. So, i decided to test drive it down the road and it seemed ok so i took it to the exhaust shop and had a 2.5" exhaust straight pipe all the way back with a mugen twin loop exhaust on and had the o2 bungs welded on. After I had my o2 sensors installed, my engine check light went off then later it came back on, and then it went off again, and from the last time that i saw it, it was on again. I don't know if that is normal or not but considering that I am running rich, I went into boost to about 4lbs to see how the BOV sounded and it was very nice. I don't know if it is ok to run it like this for a few days considering the e-manage was greddy tuned for 5 pounds for a civic and the engine check light going on and off and I am getting a rich air/fuel mixture so I think i should be ok until i get it dyno-tuned correctly. Let me know what you guys think.
Oh, someone told me that you have to break the turbo and engine in for 1500 miles before I can get into boost as if you had a new engine swap. I dunno considering that my engine isn't new and the turbo was a used turbo. I dunno, let me know though so I don't get myself into anything. Thanks.

I think you need to scan it.the too rich code should only be tripping if its dumping gas in there while you're crusing, or your foot is in the gas all the time. You need to check it out for other stuff.
Breaking in a turbo? Bah.

are you using a wideband A/F meter? if not you should be. If you got an extra $70-$80 laying around, go get a code scanner from autozone. It will save you the trouble of having them scan it for you and give you some bs.
oh nvmd i didn't see your post about autozone, lol. About my car, it's actually running really smooth, no problems yet execpt the engine check light but i'm going to go check that out today. I'll post pics hopefully today or tomorrow. thanks!
