Retard Timing Turbo

Ive tried searching but no luck.
So ive read when turboing a car, i HAVE to have the timing retarded or ill blow a piston or something, make a hole in it... Would a Vafc cover that or will i have to get something like an E Manage... What other then e manage is there to offer?

What psi can i run before i retard the timing so i dont hurt anything major in the engine?

as opto has found.......as our cars make the transistion from vac to boost, timing is actually increased.

The only way to fix that is with a the e-manage.

you can use msd ignition to control your ignition timing. You dont have to buy e-manage to control timing. The msd will do it all.

i use to run boost on my accord, and the afcII advanced my timing, i had to get a msd btm or boost timing master and that took care of it for me, that is if your running the afc hack...if you got emanage itll take care of that for you

I don't think that msd has come out with a system for the k20 or d17 ignition system. they aren't the same as the B-serise.

MSD doesn't make parts for our type of ignition.

I thought you could get something like an AEM cam Gear and manually retard the timing yourself.

MSD works for any car as long as they have 12v-16v electrical system. Heres the module you need to buy:

Heres the retard control:

civic redline, do you have this MSD hooked up to your D17 right now?

E-manage is the ONLY way (not cams or VAFC).

I hate when incorrect information is spread in here....

like i said there are msd universal boost timing masters which can be applied to internal or external coil

just get emanage, afc+btm costs about the same thing...maybe a little less but its worth it to have the emanage

i know the ignition can be controlled by the emenage but I am questioning if the coils themselves will hold up and not burn out at that rate of fire.

Good luck with that.

Timing shouldn't just be retarded because you have boost. It's all a matter of properly monitoring the engine and tuning the ignition maps in order to extract the most power in the safest operational range.

sorry I dont have turbo and dont plan too unless I upgrade the internals. My friend with a junkyard turbo uses the msd6 blaster coil on his ignition and start/retard module from msd. He also has rev chip so he can rev to 8.3 redline. I told him not to over rev unless he needs to because over revving chips will blow your engine easily. But then again, this guy can buy a new engine and install it by himself.

I'm talking about you installing a MSD 6BTM on a 2001+ civic. Good luck with that.

e-manage plus all harnesses and support tool is about $600. Kinda expensive.......but well worth it.
