Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

I don't understand how rev-matching without putting the car in nuetral helps. I've heard that it isn't necessary to double clutch with modern cars for smooth downshifts but I am under the impression that the speed of the layshaft won't change unless you double-clutch. So what I'm asking is for someone to explain how rev-matching without double-clutching works.

Re: Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

The synchros match the shaft speeds, thats their job. So on a syncornized gear box, double clutching is unnessisary.

Though if you do double clutch, your synchros will last a bit longer. Especially so if you do multiple gear down shifts.

Ok thanks. So do you double-clutch or rev-match?

Re: Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

I tend to rev-match. I just stay on the clutch. Double-clutching feels kinda unnatural o_0

Re: Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

I usually double clutch but in my new car the revs drop so fast (and I get free maintenance for 50,000 miles) I am thinking about just rev matching without releasing the clutch.

Re: Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

Rev matching is key if you don't want to upset the chassis. This is a very big ordeal when you are talking about sport bikes. I would think that it would be important for cars as well.

Re: Rev-matching vs. Double-clutching

I rev match with heel-toe most of the times that I downshift, even on my accord when I can't really reach the gas pedal from the brake. It just makes you a ton better at heel-toe when on the track.
