BMW 325 vs. The mighty D17A2

Alright, this is my first time posting a race story so here goes.. I'm long winded so if you don't mind reading incessantly pointless details read on.

First off, I only race people in a straight line 1/4 mile situation if A) They're also driving a civic or B) They're driving an automatic V6 setup and need to learn why standards are the **** ... because otherwise my impotent civic will get it's *** handed to it and i'll be cringing at the wheel-hop that happens 50% of the time.

However, I end up finding myself in interesting races where brute power matters less and driving skill plays a larger role. My daily commute to university takes me down a 2-3 lane road for 20 minutes with very predictable radar traps and the best section of multiple lane roadway in the city, which means I get to take on all sorts of cars as it is well known in Edmonton as a place to go fast - the 3 single car accidents i've seen in the past few months are a good sign that this is unsafe, and it is with that disclaimer that we finally get into my story. **In no way do i condone unsafe driving on public roads**

I was doing my usual 90km/h (55mph) when I noticed the newer model 325 weaving in and out of traffic. I took it up to 100 and after a few moves was able to get around the 325 and let him know I was there. After a few darts through traffic we came up to the final light before Groat rd ("the twisties") - In my rearview mirror was a noticeably agitated guy in his 40's with one passenger... maybe he was in a hurry and was annoyed I got ahead of him, or maybe he was busy making fun of my impotent car, who cares. The light goes green and I take off, pushing up to 140km/h on the entrance to the twisties with the BMW directly on my ***. He could have gotten past me, but as anyone with a bit of driving knowledge knows there is an optimal line when entering a corner at high speed, and I had it. We hit turn 1 and I could feel him breathing down my neck as we made the transition to turn 2.. my rear end was right on the edge of slipping out but I held it coming into turn 3. Turn 3 or turn 4 is where I usually make my passes when i'm playing catch-up, so I was ready for his attempt on turn 4 and shut him out again. All of this was occurring at speeds from 80-100km/h through this sequence, (higher speeds can be attained in the summertime on 17" rubber.. i'm on 14" winters right now) which then turns into a single lane for about half a kilometer before opening up into a two lane bridge with 2 more high speed corners around and up a hill. I kept the car WOT for the next 2 minutes and the bimmer followed my every move, trying again to pass on the next corner but finding himself on the outside with slower moving traffic to deal with. We played cat and mouse until I finally turned off after the last serious corner and he blew by me.. I came to a stop and finally started breathing again.

So, does this count as a kill? Mr. 325 clearly wanted by me and made every effort to do so.. including passing slower traffic on the shoulder at one point.

Maybe I need to get into Autocrossing?

thats so foolish, how many lanes is this twistie road?
If its 2 lanes on each side the bmw still had no chance if you were hogging up the road. He was probably just enjoying his full leather interior with perfect traction 4wd system and ZERO road noise hehehe
thats alright im glad you had fun

Custom - If he had a perfect traction 4wd system he'd by in an Xi, which he wasn't. If he was relaxing in his leather interior I doubt he'd be riding my *** and passing on the shoulder.. considering how hard I was pushing my car, and the fact that my car is a slow *** civic, maybe you're right though. It was probably just a leisurely drive for him.

Sorry stud, like I said i've never posted a race story before, i realize now that it looks confusing to someone who can't picture it, so here's a map. The race lasted from 111th ave & Groat all the way down to the bottom of the map where Groat cuts off by the University.

Seems like most people will say that if you're in a civic and you're racing someone not in a civic that you lose no matter what because 1) the other car is faster 2) they aren't trying and 3) if they are trying and you win they are a bad driver.

I agree with 1 and 2, but I think 3 is ok. If you race someone driving a faster car and they lose because they aren't as good a driver, then you've officially won. Driving skill plays a huge part IMO.

Sounds like it was fun. I have a lot of this going on on my way to work. What I love is that the people with the "faster" cars can never seem to keep up with me in the turns although after the turns they usually catch up.

the only time that I'd run on a twisties is if I am by myself. I don't mind putting my life in danger, but putting others in danger isn't exactly my cup of tea. However, according to what you said, then the beemer driver was in a mid-life-crisis and tried to show his passenger that he could drive.

Then again, he could have been in his car, laughing, telling the passenger, "Look at this, and I am not even trying!".

I dunno. I get a lot of junk because I drive a D17...especially from my wife. I'm actually thinking about slapping some springs or coilovers on the car, then some 15's on low profile tires. Yeah, it may look a bit retarded, but it will definately help rotational weight and acceleration. I don't care about mileage anymore...my wife said that I am going to keep the car, then I am going to mod the heck out of it.

a bmw can totally out manuever a civic on a twisty road, you were just blocking him so he has no chance to get around you, especailly a newer 325, it wouldve raped you but yea its no big deal of you race someone and lose, ive done it before

It depends on what is done to the civic.

The 325 posts a 0.86 on the skidpad, compared to a stock Civic's 0.84.

Add some 17's on there with sticky tires, and the civic will jump up there. Add springs and swaybars, and you are definately over the 325.

that would make you about equal with the 325, a civic cant compare with a brand new bmw, maybe an older on but bmw is such high quality. A 2004 honda civic with sway bars and springs vs a 2004 bmw 325 would have no chance, especially at high speeds, in my friends 92 bmw he went 65 around a sharp turn with no skidding at all, and can a civic do that no way in hell

I couldn't find specs on a new one, the one I saw was a 2004 model. I haven't driven a new one, so I don't know the improvements.

But I'd love to have a beemer.

my bro has the 06 325i , and I drive it once in awhile, and as ME being a civic driver as well , I don't know about the older Bmw's but IT IS A "NO" competition btw civic and the new BMW's. that's it, straight line or twisted lanes or whatever you call it bmw has it all.
handling is just great 'n smooth (my civic is lowered with H&R springs/ Tokico Blues and a 19mm rsx swaybar, and sure it handles and take corners nice at high speeds, but not as smooth as bimmers) and for the SPEED... I raced this GSR with I/E and some other stuff he said i don't remember. From a stop, 0-85miles I had about 3 cars on him I was really surprised that i won by that much...welll my story is getting too long so...cya lol

No offense taken. I once raced a 4dr Sunfire with 2 passengers in the car and was raped .5, 1, and 1 car length three times in a row from a dead stop. I blamed the rotational mass of my 17's since he was on some sweet 14" Wal-Mart tires. Boy that Eco-tec is torquey, I gots to get me one of those sweet hot domestics, power and resale value all rolled into one.

After that day I rarely race in a straight line, although the feeling of a perfect launch with my summer tires makes it worthwhile enough sometimes. If my car was boosted or swapped of course i'd be trying plenty of races.

That's funny.. I've raced other cars on this road and despite their taking the optimal line have been able to power by them on the outside lane. All I did was take the optimal line. If his car was "totally outmaneuvering" my civic he had multiple opportunities to take the outside lane and pass by me, but to do so would have pushed his car and driving ability to the limits. With only .02 difference on the skidpad i'd expect him to be a damn good driver if he sailed by me as i'm pushing right to the edge of traction. Also, this wasn't the new gen 3 series, it was the previous.. probably 03-04.

Question - Is it worth it to add a sway bar if I don't see myself having the money to lower my car for awhile? All i've done to this car is put rims and rubber on and there is definite room for improvement.. but I wonder how much would be gained from some minor things like sway/strut bars.

After reading the title of this thread and laughing at how stupid the title was I went back and read the garbage anyway just to see what kind of lame content it had and sure enough it was pretty lame just as I presumed and stupid to say the least. You should have your license revoked for driving like a fvcking idiot.

I like that you're calling me an idiot, especially with the expletive.. considering you can't even grasp the sarcasm in the thread's title. It's OK, take 5, 10, even 30 minutes to ponder the nature of sarcasm and then think about taking your foot out of your mouth and we'll talk.
