93 Maxima
Hey, not sure if this is the right forum but whatever.
I'm about to get a 93 Maxima as a beater. the car has 200k miles on it..... i know its a lot but i drove it today and it runs really smooth. tranny changes smoothly where you cant even feel it, engine working really quitley, no oil leaks, no squeeks anywhere....... this is my friend's car and all of these miles are highway miles cuz he used the car to get to Boston and back like 20 times each summer for 4 years.
Anyway, he wants 500 for it...... what do you guys think? I'm gonna take it to my mechanic to check it for major problems and all.
any opinions?

2 things... I'm saying this from experience, we put 135K on a 93 GXE before my dad traded it for his BMW.
The electrical system is a nightmare. **** broke all the time. The doors wouldn't unlock when it was cold. The cruise control was intermittent, the driver's door panel (window control) died a couple times.
The transmission is the weak link. It has been the doom of Maximas for I don't know how long. Had it rebuilt at 106K to the tune of $1000+. If the tranny hasn't already been rebuilt/replaced, plan on it.
It was a good car though, I don't think anyone had any complaints about it, it was 11 years old when we got rid of it, problems and all, the BMW dealer gave us $1000 for it, so if you can get a good running one for 500, I'd buy it if you're willing to take a gamble on a major repair along the way. Honestly, I guess for 500, when it goes, ditch it. Motor was never a problem, it ran like a top... its just everything around it. Its either a VE30DE (SOHC 3.0L, 160 HP) or the better VG30DE (DOHC 3.0L, 190 HP), both of which were ranked at the time as a pair of the top engines in the world. Nissan knows engines, thats for sure.
