Strut install ....now popping noise!!
Strut install ....now popping noise!!
i changed my front struts with new oem struts and new oem bearing seats. I did mark the spring with the strut housing before removal to make sure they went back the same.....now i get a popping noise after installing.
So i removed them again and check the index marks. The arrows are dead center and pointing out! The spring is seated nice and not rubbing the perch!
what else could it be making that noise????

Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
It's the tension between metal parts rubbing against each other. You need to buy some all purpose grease for suspension and grease them between the springs and the mount. If it helps, looks at the old springs and struts, and grease them where ever the old parts are greased at.
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
I noticed it on both..Since its a 2002 i have 2 arrows on each strut assembly!
I lined up the arrow on the top hat and on the spring seat like this
><
If the rim is on the left should they line up like this
<<
Or like so

Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
hey i installed tein flex last summer and everything was fine and dandy until like a month ago and i got the sam ething, when im turning usually right there is a popping noise everyone once in awhile and only while turning, im hoping its this greasing thing but where do i grease a set of coilovers a bit worried?
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
I went through the same thing for more than a year. I finally had it and bought some grease. The noise is completely gone. Handling is much smoother and better overall. Grease anywhere metal parts comes in contact with each other. I greased in between spring and bearing and between bearing and top mount.
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
i had the same problem with my nuespeed sports n stock struts..came to install my new tokico struts and found out the other guy put the springs in the wrong way...installed my new struts and springs and new bearings and bammm no popping sound
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
So how did you align your arrows???
I did the new bearing also and still that damm noise... I have the first arrow pointing towards the car and the second arrow towards outside.....Is this correct?

Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
F**k the arrows. The arrows your talking about are meant for correct torque on a stock (and by stock I mean installed at the factory) suspension. Otherwise it should be different. Torque on a removed bolt means nothing (the arrows on a removed bolt). Its to the point that the arrows don't mean a damn thing. With that much of an open tolerance (vs stock) it means NOTHING!!

I don't know what your talking about.......
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
dont listen, the arrows do matter, the arrow is on the top hat, dont listen to someone who hasnt done this, listen to me, and listen well, the arrows all point towards outside of vehicle, it matters when they springs seat in the top hat, please, redo that part, all the arrows should line op with each other, facing outwards

Finally a real answer!!!!!!!!!
I had the arrow tips touching eachother....so thats the noise problem...... So the arrows need to be facing the rim.....Gotta try this ASAP!
This will be my third time removing the strut assemblies trying to solve this problem! Hopefully this works!
Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
OK, i redid the strut assembly because the driver side was making noise after i did the new oem front struts. Passenger side is fine!!
So i aligned the arows up the way its supposed to be. I greased the top of the spring where it looks like it may touch. I have brand new bearings i bought. I reinstalled and still a little bit of popping noise. What the hell could it be. How could the driver side be so picky with alighnment but passenger side is perfect???
Does the top hat go bad?
Could it be a bad coil spring?

Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
Yes and yes to your questions. Metal springs with dirt (or less than complete lubrication) and weight on them are quite sticky, making them 'pop' while twisting them during turning.
Problems like this one have a way of moving about without any real signs until they become a problem.

Re: Strut install ....now popping noise!!
i dont even have an arrow on my drivers side spring seat (aftermarket). it's easy to tell how it's supposed to go in there just by looking at the shape of the strut tower, not to mention the top hat mount has a specific bolt pattern that will only go through the holes one way.
