Another 7thgen Suspension Gripe!

Justin (boilermaker) and I were talking yesterday. I had put my front JICs on and I set the camber plate to full positive camber. Man did I have mad TOE OUT!!! Justin apparently did some changing of the camber plate and whenever you change the camber, you change the toe too!!!!! Arg. He is going to try and find some fix, but damn this suspension is a pain in the *** to work with!!

Yeah...this dumbass steering design is nothing but trouble. I'm gonna call JIC and some racing shops I trust and see what they say. I'm not exactly sure what can be done other than getting an alignment done with dual settings for camber and toe, but I'm gonna find out if someone knows if anything else can be done.

that isn't the problem. We have camber plates which means we can change the camber relatively quickly. But when you change the camber, it pulls on the steering knuckle and changes the toe also. Justin let me know what you find out.

blacksheep is an unknown quantity at this point
well I don't think there's ANY car where you can adjust camber without affecting toe. Tilting the top of the knuckles outward will automatically affect toe since the steering rack stays fixed.

You really need to get the car aligned after ANY suspension geometry adjustments

Cars with hydros or bags must be crazy to drive since you're always changing height, hence camber and toe.

You should be able to adjust it without getting toe to the point the car is undrivable. The placement of the steering arm is magnifying the effect because its farther from the point of rotation (the knuckle) than most normally designed steering systems.

Well I just spent a while calling around. Basically, set your alignment and leave it. So for you race people... think of what you'd set your race alignment to, then figure out what your street setting would be, and go 1/2 way between them. The guy I talked to at JIC said someone was making adjustable tie rods to correct this problem and the issue of the tie rod hitting the frame from lowering it too much, but didn't have any info. Anyone wants to search the net for it, go ahead.
I guess I'm just gonna deal for now, I'll go in again towards the summer and knock the camber in some more.
In short... there's no solution at the moment to get dual settings with minor alteration to the toe.

One solution.... set the camber/toe up for autocross. Run that on the street, and since you are goning to be eating front tires..... Buy some Rock hard cheep tires for the street. (they will last a bit longer and be cheeper to replace too)

Boilermaker, Ron does that. He has his civic set to -2 Deg front camber all the time, and he runs Hard *** tires to get the maximum longevity out of them even with the extream settings.

This kinda makes me glad that the 7th gen isnt goning to see much autocross this year.... One of my friends picked up an 89 Si that he preped for STS... He wants me to Co drive it with him.
