Red face Thread Came Off With Nut, HELP!!

Hey everyone, just recenlty I got new 17" rims from discount tire. That was about 2 months ago. Today I was going to paint my calipers red, but when I tried to remove all the bolts from the drivers side front wheel, all of them came off fine except one. That one was frozen in place, so I kept trying to remove it. After a while, I tried one more time and the nut finally came off, but the screw that the nut goes on had broken off with it. Now, first off, is the Discount Tire's fault that this broke off? I just tried to remove it like any other bolt. Secondly, is it safe to drive with only 3 bolts holding my tire on? I am thinking that I will need two new discs since the bolt threads and the disc brakes are one complete cast. Id really appreciate you alls help.

All you need is a new stud. Take it back to Discount Tire tell them the situation and they should send you to a shop to get it fixed for free. Hope this helps.

Peace

Yea, take it back to Discount Tire. They typically have pretty good customer service.

BTW, the rotor and the studs are not together. The studs are just poking thru holes in the rotor.

wont work trust me, it happened to me too, well, it was a 5th gen civic though, it could have changed, but with my 5thgen they told me they could no prob then they looked at it and decided that it was much more complicated and much more money, i cant remember what they said but i remember they said they had to break something in order to get it out. i dont know if the 7thgen's are the same though

The guy at discount tire today said that they can get some people next door to fix it, so ill give it a shot. If not, then they will have to buy me a whole new rotor, since they were the last to mess with it.

Wow! This exact same thing happened to me last weekend. I was all excited to put my 18's back on for the better weather. 1,2,3...fine. 4th lug nut started to loosen but then got stuck. Backed it up and tried again. Used a little more "umphh" and nothing. At that point, I had gone beyond the point of no return. Out comes the breaker bar. "Nnnnnggggg...SNAP!" Hey, I finally got the lug nut off! But...half the wheel stud came with it.

Honda Tech at the dealership says it happens on occasion. Could be faulty manufacturing, debris in the threads that could have seized it up, or something else. It had happened to him a few times as well.

Funny thing is, I've always hand tightened the lug nuts until snug (careful of course to not cross-thread) and then torque to 80ft/lbs.

Cost me $160 to get the broken stud out and 4 new studs put in. Figured better safe than sorry and I really hate bringing my car into the dealership.

yup happend to me too.. and DISCOUNT TIRE DID IT... it has to do with when they tourqe ur ****... they did it to much.. and what happened is they Cross threaded it. a common thing that happens with Air guns when people dont know how to 'SEAT' the lug before throwin the gun on them.... I screeeeemed at discount and they said to go get it fixed and they would pay for the repairs... well... the local shop said 60 bucks plus cost of the stud (5$) well i said screw that and went to HONDA... they charged 170 bucks :-) . So i went back to discount... their mouth DROPPED and the removed me the cash from the register..... they have to pay for it. THEY HAVE TO . they did it. its not ur fault they dont know how to use air tools.

Chenz, you are wrong they do not have to pay for it. They do pay for them some times to bring someone back. There is NO WAY to prove that you did not mess with the lugs since they did, so they can argue that you changed the setup and are trying to get money from them. BTW it is company policy (and you WILL be fired if seen not doing this and EVERY single person that I have worked with does) to screw the lug on two or three turns prior to using the air gun. Also they torque it to 80 ft/lbs, the same that honda does and every other place that works on your car. Mistakes do happen and that is why they do replace some, don't try and get free stuff from them because some store managers will not give you money for a new stud.
