junkyard drum to disk conversion
junkyard drum to disk conversion
So i saw a few threads on this topic and it got me thinking. I hate drums cause they are a pain and disc's are so much more effective, as far as I know. So it i have an 04 ex what parts would I need? There is a junk yard not to far from me that has a load of older accord (early 2000's) do they come stock with disks and can I take them off and do the switch? Or could I take the fronts of an 02-05 and use them for the rear? Cause now that I think about it accords are 5 lug aren't they? If anyone has done it or knows how to do it, I would appreciate the feedback!!

Whoeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee if your saying you want to take the fronts and put them on the rear you need to do a lot more research.
The parts your looking for are from a 7th gen Civic Si or Acura EL (If your in Canada).
You need:
Rear knuckles (as complete as possible)
Rear hubs + bearing (Should be part of knuckle)
Rear discs
Rear calipers
E-brake cables
Rear Brake hoses
Rear ABS sensors are good to snag up too, though you don't REALLY need them.
That pretty much sums it up. You will be looking for parts from an EP3 or from a 2002-2005 civic SI (same as EP3).
Installation is pretty straightforward unless you run into issues. If you don't have ABS you will probably need a proportioning valve and possibly a master cylinder and brake booster. But since you have an EX you have ABS and should not need those parts.
Check my build thread you will see that I converted to 5 lug with rear disc. Lots of good information in there for you.

Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
If you want to stay 4 lug then look for rear knuckles off of an 02-03 Si. 04-05 they went to 5 lug.
Look on the forums also for rear disk swaps. I got mine complete for $300 shipped. I have seen guys sell complete 5 lug swaps on ClubRSX for $500.

Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
You mean 04 civics or 04 accords? Mines an 04 with 4 lug. If I can't pull off an si, what aura can I pull from?
Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
Acura EL is the only one you can pull it from. Same years as our civics, and even rarer than civic Si parts as it can only be found in Canada. Sometimes it's easier to just find a 5 lug swap and do that but your looking into new rims.
Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
Yeah, I would prefer to stay with 4. So for parts I need the calipers, rotors, whatever is used to hook it all up, the attachment for the e brake and the proportioning valve right? What is the valve exactly??
Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
You have an EX so you don't need the valve. It basically controls how much pressure goes where (Front - back). I made a list of parts you need above
The knuckles are the most important part. I think you can get hubs + bearings and install them onto your current knuckles. But I'm not 100% sure.

You should really think about this long and hard before you decide to do the swap. Removing any parts on the suspension can sound easy (2 or 3 bolts here and there) but can turn ugly fast (due to rust and high heat exposure). You'll have to bleed your entire system as well.
At a minimum (4-lug EP3) you'll need to get rear knuckles (hubs + bearings), calipers, rotors, brake lines, e-brake cables, brake pads and perhaps the rear abs sensors.
I did mine and it was a TON of work... bought my parts second hand and ended up having to replace the front caplipers.
I'm not trying insult your mechanical skill just want to you to realize that it can (but not always) be a pain! Discs are more of an aesthetic upgrade.

Re: junkyard drum to disk conversion
I got lucky and found a complete swap for cheap and rust free, and getting the old knuckles off was actually easy, even though my car was winter driven...the only hard part for me was replacing the brake lines. as they were corroded...get the right parts and you're on the right track.
