Repair or New Car?
Repair or New Car?
Hello All,
I have a 2014 hybrid Civic that has served me well on my work commute to the tune of 165,000 miles. I feel I am at a decision point on whether to repair the issues I have or shop for a new car.
For the past year and a half, due to the pandemic I have been working from home with no commute. Over the winter months, the battery in my civic died and I replaced it this spring. Since the new battery was installed, most, if not all, of my dash warning lights come on after ignition and stay on. This problem persists after having driven the car many times. I haven't detected any issues driving due to what the lights warn for. I recall something similar happened about 4 years ago when I accidentally left the inside dome light on in the car. I had difficulty getting the car started due to the drained battery, but after I did manage to get it started all of the dash warning lights came on. However, they cleared after I drove the car a day or so and cycled the ignition. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I took the car to my Honda dealer and they could not figure out why all of the warning lights were on. This was frustrating to me because I find it hard to believe that diagnostic logging could not tell them anything as to the root cause or if the lights coming on was legitimate.
Another issue is a somewhat loud rattling noise that is persistent . This rattling has been ongoing for over a year and at first I thought it might be attributed to a squeaky belt perhaps due to the car sitting outside in rainy/humid conditions. It seems the issue is now most likely a bad AC compressor. As with the dash warning lights issue, my Honda dealer could only tell me: "Looks like you need a new AC system". Again I was frustrated that they could not diagnose and pinpoint the root cause.
I've taken the car this past week to another non-dealer shop and the initial quote for a new AC compressor was $2300. When I pressed them to ask them if they could check for coolant leaks before they installed a new compressor (which they refused to do), they got rude and told me that after all, they could not replace an AC compressor in a Civic HYBRID. This same shop could not tell me anything about the root cause of the dash warning lights either.
So it seems, I can continue my quest for a shop that can honestly diagnose my issues and sink money into repairs or take the path of shopping for a new car.

Re: Repair or New Car?
dash lightning like a Christmas tree is usually low or fluctuating voltage. It causes havoc to the electronic pieces.
could be normal battery, could be the IMA installation, could be the charging system.
moved thread to Hybrid section, engine/electrical systems is too different from regular engine cars.
