Changed Starter and Now I have check engine light on!

Hey friends,

Have a 2007 Honda Civic LX wich had a bad starter replaced. Moment I pick up car and drive away I get check engine light. Error codes are P0135 & P0498. How can I properly diagnose these issues first before ordering the parts. Are there fuses I can check?

Don't rush to order parts without any type of diagnosis. Take it back to the mechanic, tell him what happened and ask him to read the codes + do a live data scan on it. Afterwards, ask him to clear the codes to see if they return. They shouldn't charge you a fee.

Hey brother. He cleared the codes but it returned it seems. Not sure if I should check fuses first

Prior to bringing your car to this mechanic you didn't have any CEL's correct?
After this mechanic did a starter replacement you now have two CEL's as soon as you left his garage..coincidence?

Same thing I thought. If I had a garage I would work on my own car

So, he isn't claiming any responsibility? At minimum he could at least help you diagnose the problem to narrrow down the resolution and possible cost involved.

One free thing you can try is checking all engine and chassis grounds for tightness and cleanliness. You can also try clearing the codes by (ecu reset/idle relearn):

P0135 is for A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) Heater Circuit Malfunction. I don't know these engines very well but this sensor is right on top of the exhaust manifold. It's possible the mechanic either had to unplug it to get to the starter or damaged it while replacing.

P0498 I believe is for the EVAP canister vent shut valve. Couldn't find it in the 2007 service manual but that's the description from another generation. I don't know if the mechanic could have caused this.
