1991 civic engine swap ideas
Hello! I'm going to restore my grandfather's old 1991 Honda Civic hatchback. It has a 1.3l D13B1 as stock and it just isn't good enough. I'm looking for more power and carburetor won't cut it.
My only option here is to do an engine swap. I'm thinking of D15Z6, because my neighbor has one laying around. Also a friend of mine could sell me a D16Z6 engine.
Which enginge would you recommend for a swap? I am planning to install a turbo kit after the swap as well, for even more power. Would be nice to show the might of Japanese engines to those BMW guys always speeding around with their cat back exhausts in my neighborhood.
Anyways, I'm open for your ideas and recommendations.

Re: 1991 civic engine swap ideas
to go from carburetor to fuel injection, you will need to adapt the ECU and its accompanying wiring, a lot of wiring, all the way to the OBDII port under the dash (recommended to have when engine runs into troubles)
Then, you need to contact like hasport for engine mounts, mating kits to the transmission, etc.
If you add forced induction, the stock ECU will not cut it, so you will need to find engine management systems. (Don't cheap out in this, this is what kills engines. Plenty information on forced induction on the 6th gen area)
thinking about, not sure if the trans would live long, you might need to adapt it too.
Impossible? No.
here is an even harder one to do.

Re: 1991 civic engine swap ideas
Thank you for your reply. Can't 6th gen engines fit on 5th gen vehicles without without changing the engine mounts? Also my goal is not to turbocharge it straight away. I just want to see it running with the new engine first. When swapping the engine, do I also need to swap the gearbox and driveshafts?
Which engine do you recommend for a swap, the D15Z6 or D16Z6? Or something else?

Definitely the Z6 (if we’re talking about the two you mentioned).
Lots of threads documenting the swap online.
Whereabouts are you located? I don’t think North America got a carbureted 5th Gen so that’ll complicate the acquisition of parts on your end.
Long-term, you’re probably better off b-swapping.

I reside in Europe. Acquisition of parts shouldn't be a problem. B engines are pretty rare and since I'm not planning to go on a race track, I think D would do just fine. I had a typo. They are both Z6's.

if you are going to turbo, get both engines...
most screw up their first engine... in a lame pursuit for pure power without considering engine life.
my brother alone destroyed 7 or 8 engines (VW) because he couldn't understand power/lean mixture for MPG.

I don't think that I have to worry about messing up. As I'm not experienced enough to do it, I'm gonna let it be done by a professional. And it's just an idea, but as I said, my first goal is to see the car on the road.

I don’t know anything about the D15Z6, but I’m pretty familiar with the D16Z6. The D16Z6 is objectively the best D-series engine (that or the D15B), and you’d be able to get a lot of power out of it if you so desire.
