Smoke came out of steering column. Crank no start, and can't shift out of park?
I have a 03 Civic LX.
Quick back story so you can understand what happened.
Car wouldn't smog because the obd2 port didnt have power. The fix was a simple 10amp fuse.
But it kept blowing. So I know there was a short somewhere.
Turns out it was the radio, sisters bf without my knowledge went and "tried" to put in a new after Market radio. Didn't do it, and ****ed up all the wires.
Before I fixed that I put in a 20amp fuse instead of 10 to see if that really was the cause of my obd2 port having no power. Put it in, didn't pop, turned the car on, and it was reading.
A few seconds later smoke came out of the steering column. I immediately turned it off, took out the fuse.
Waited a few moments, and it started up with no issues, and no smoke.
I was able to fix the short, 10amp fuse no longer pops, and obd2 scanner works, and gives me zero codes.
I started the car, went down the street and it just died. Cranks, but won't start. Even when in the ON position, it would not shift into neutral, I had to stick my key into the interlock bypass to push it.
I tried replacing the ignition switch, and that didn't work.
Upon more expection I found fuse #6: FI ECU to be blown.
Research says it's the crank position sensor, so I tested it by unplugging it and trying to start the car, the fuse still popped.
I read that also connects to the immobilizer, but when I turn the key no green light comes on, witch i read if does come on, and stay on the immobilizer is bad.
Also read it can be the ECM/PCM that can be bad.
I also read because my car won't shift, it can be the shift interlock solenoid, so right now I am at a loss.
Re: Smoke came out of steering column. Crank no start, and can't shift out of park?
I looked before, and couldn't find anything that looked burnt. I'll look again, maybe a connector got messed up?
I'm not used to dealing with electrical issues, so my guess if I find something wrong with a connection or wire, is to splice it, and put in a new connector, just match the colors?
Re: Smoke came out of steering column. Crank no start, and can't shift out of park?
Quick update. I checked on the steering column for any sign of burnt wires, and the connectors and couldn't find anything. I did however happen to find this connector that is plugged into the fuse box inside the car, drivers side that looks like it's partially burnt with this weird grease on it. I don't know how to test if this is the short, or what it's exactly called, or what to order to fix?

I also did notice that when I turn the key into the ON position, there is no green key light. Doesn't flash at all. Could that be the reason why my car won't start? The immobilizer is bad?
Re: Smoke came out of steering column. Crank no start, and can't shift out of park?
Fuse 6 keeps getting blown. Finding the short is becoming very troublesome. I'm going to try testing the pins in the connectors and see if I get any power or continuity. I feel like either I damaged a wire, or the immobilizer
Re: Smoke came out of steering column. Crank no start, and can't shift out of park?
Fuse 6 also powers the crankshaft position sensor, the ECM/PCM, fuel injectors, IACV, main relay 1 and 2, and the camshaft position sensor. Lots of options here. Smoke out the steering column leads me to believe it was the immobilizer control unit, ring around the input to the ignition switch. Try unplugging it, then see if the fuse blows.

I just ordered some new relays, so I will see if that improves anything. I know I test the Camchaft sensor and so far that's still good. Next I'll try unplugging the pcm, and the immobilizer like u said to see if it still blows the fuse.
